Speaking ports of S With the change for the warmer in the weather of the past week, baseball teams In this city, the samo an in other cities and towns through. out New England, have begun their actlyities on the dlamond. Junior teams in New Britaln are all send- ing out thelr challenges and tho continual warfare of the summer on the dlamend will be under way with- in a woek or so. Practice sessions are being held weekly and many of the nines are | pulling into shape and give promiso of being in mid-season form when the first game is to be played, This afternoon and tomorrow will see all | of the teams out on the diamonds | about the city working out arms whieh have lain dormant all winter. The Falcons and Speedboys are practicing at St. Mary's field today. | The Falcons will also have another workout tomorrow morning. Tho orbin Red Sox will be out at Wal- wut 1011 park this afternoon getting in shape for the first game. The Orloles baseball nine will mact at YWalnut 11l park this after- noon for practice, The new uni- forms which are made up of a white sult with blue letters for the name, will be given out to the players £o it behooves all ot them to gt around. These and many other teams are getting into the swim for the com- ing season and soon the whack of the bat on the leather will be heard vesounding through the city. The Totary club will have its plans all 1nit out for the continuation of the Boys' league and there apparentiy will b elght teams in the loop this vear, The Industrinl basehall leaguo will swing into action soon with cight teams aleo in this 100p. Tt"s going to be a busy season for a1l tears concerned. The high sehool haseball nine starts the season today against Naugatuck Hish in Nauga- tuck. Coach George M. Cassidy has one of the hardest jobs of his career as athletic coach at the high school to form a hascball nine. Not in many years has he only one regular from last year around whom ho will have to build a team, Nevertheless, despite gloomy predictions, New Britain High school boys have always heen in the swim, especially in baseball and it won't surprige us any if the coach devels ops a strong team out of what he has. Today's ameg will arcat interest by all those interes in the high sehool and it is the hop« of the band of loyal rooters that the local boys will come out on top in the tilt, be awaited with been left with | fod | )y Kaplan of Meriden, Touis (F fentherweight champion of the world, will defend his title against Bobby soldier the Queensbury stadium This bout at on Long Island June 1. was approved by the New York hox« ing commission yesterday and Gar-| cit has been named as a substitute former cham- to Johnny Dundee, an infury to pion, who has suffered his ankle. (arcia will prove to be the tough- est proposition Kaplan has met in some time., His last appearance in Tartford against Johniy Drew Holyoke gave the fans in this scc- tion a good idea of tho type of fighter which he represents. He and Kaplan are somewhat the same the fans who sce the bout something {o talk about between now and the date set for the milling. There are many fans in this state who, after seeing Garcin put Drew almost out in their battle in Hart- ford. favor the soldier to defeat the champion mueh harder againgt Touis than he did against Drew to win the fight. It appears to us that a fighter ol Drow's type, always boring in, will have something to stop him when Kaplan starts shooting his punches him. Kaplan & developing ard drive that is putting them to steep and he will be able to hurt Garcela. Tommy Burns of Detroit has been substituted for Ad Stone to meet Jack Delancy in Humbert 1Pugazy's hout at Ebbet's ficid in Brooklyn on Burns is a4 comer in the nd one that will give the Bridgeport battler a good go.
