| s MISS FRANCES DEAN 4 Migs Dean is to be another April bride. She is the danghter of Mr. and Mrs. D, E. Dean of Pittsburgh, Pa., % formerly of this city, and will marry Kenneth Vreeland, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Vreeland of West Hartford. \ S . ° o0 : cial Activities About Town - ¥ 4 r——— With the coming of Ash Wednesday which falls on Feb- ruary 17th, there will be brought to a cloge an unusually’ long and fashionable winter season of many weeks. Its be- 2] cinning was marked by the Autumn Ball at the Shuttle i Meadow club early in October, perhaps, cavly for these day Uthough there are those who remember when the L4 A <ocial season was opened auspiciously in September. Since those days matters have changed vastly with the prolonged tay of so many at country and shore places, as thanks to the modern motor, it is an easy matter to continue the en- i ioyrivent of summer homes which in other days were closed weeks earlier. There was a time when lenten observances were more sirietly adhered to, but nowadays entertainments of onc sorf or another extend throughout the period, to be sure. most of them are for the purpose of aiding philanthropical or charitable institutions, therefore such endeavors are to be encouraged. Theatrical productions will vie with auction H 5 and musicales and between them there will wdant funds e rumors come regarding the annual cabaret crs of Shuttle Meadow elub. It is to take | he club house on the evening of Saturday, March ¢ 20th and Mrs. Howard Parsons who is to be “master of ceremonies” this year is sure to make a success of it. In this, one does not go in for great talent and the spectator may reserve the right to his own opinions as to the ability of the performers, but the mummer gets a thrill out of it. Perhaps its unvest, perhaps its dramatic instinct—at all the cast has an immensely amusing time prepar- the occasion. % % It goes without saying that this week’s baby blizzard 1 the efiect of turning the town into a veritable Lake ¢id. Winter sports have been well to the front, skiing, snowshoeing, sliding, skating and the good old-fashioned sleigh 1 - hold the center of the stage. y x % Tho Mid-Winter Ball occuiring tonight at the Shuttle Teadow club does not hold promise of being the event arlier notices predicted, due no doubt to the heavy snow— or perhaps to the fact that a large number of the club members are away @ is time. However there are to be a few dinner parties and while the diners and dancers will wmber only 65, the affair is sure to be a success.
