L4 " CHING SITOATION - FULLY EXPLAINED Prol, Farnam Talks to New o Haven Lious 1] New Haven, Oct. 30.—The conse- quences to world peace and to the relations between the United States and China will be disastrous, unless the U. 8. can meet the Chineso in & spirit of fairness und frankly recognize the justice of their claims &t the Peking confercnce on cus- toms which opened Monday, Prof. Henry W, Farnum of Yale university % told the Lions club yesterday. Prof. Farnum, who considered an authority on China, spoke on “China and the U, 8" He began With an outline sketch of the physio- graphy, the history and the econ- omic and cultural condition of China, a knowledge of which is necessary for any understanding of the present, he sald . He referred to the great area of China, larger than that of the United States, its 4 Pbopulation, three times that of the United States, its history and culture going back more than four thousand years and Its wonderful agricultural ekill which has enabled it to main- tain a large population through the genturles on the same land. “The questions which are about to be discussed in the Peking con- ferences have resulted naturally from the three-fold impact alrcady desired but have been brought to a head by a number of special cir- cumstanées, these was the world war, which dis- closed to the Chinese some of the weak points of western civilization. Another was the V ngton confer- ence of 1922, Chinese an opportunity to assert their right as a sovereign nation and resulted in the nine power treaty. The delay, however, in the ratification of the treaty by France caused irritation which was intensi- fied by the Shanghai shooting of May and other occurrences. There has been a growing spirit of nation- alism in China and these occurrences raised that spirit to fever heat. “The Pcking conference on cus- toms duties opened Monday and is to be followed by one on I extra- territorlality In Decembe L The questions to be discussed at the are by no means simple and there is much to be said on hoth sides, but the consequences to the peace of the world and {o the relations between the U. 8. and China will be disas- trous, unless wo can meet the Chinese in a spirit of fairness and frankly recognize the justice of their claims, while safeguarding at the same time the interests of foreign residents in China.” GROTH-DOERR WEDDING AT ST.
