OF €, RLL Goal of 1,00 Set at Banquet Marking Drive End The initial step in the direction of a bigger and better Chamber of Commerce through the attainment of more suitable and permanent hous- ing facilities was taken last night at the closing banquet of the week's membership drive conducked by that organization when George H, Dyson reported to President Joseph An- drows that the $50 prize recently captuged by the Porrte & Dyson store in the window display com- petitions had been deposited with a local bank as the nucleus of a Chamber of Commerce permancnt bullding fund. This was the surprise feature of a surprise meeting, the attalnment of the weck's quota as the result of a desperate 11th hour offensive launched over the week-end by the team captains being another source of unexpected pleasure to Secretary Ralph Gould and Chairman Donald Gaffney and others directing the membershlp campalgn., Another big surprise was the presenting by the chamber through its president, Joseph R. Andrews, of a traveling kit to Congressman Dan Reed of New York, spark plug of the Nes Britain campaign. The drive opened a wegk ago yes- terday with the anticipated goal being the signing of 400 new mem- bers. Until last night's finale only 286 had been rounded up but in the week.end drive which has not spent itself even yet, 118 new mem- bers were enrolled, making the total gathered into the fold during the week, 404, New Goal of 1,500 Set When it was announced that these 404 new members had brought the total membership of the chamber up to 1,418, the team captains at the suggestion of Chairman Donald Gaffney rose en masse to their feet and pledged themselves to continue their efforts until the New Britain Chamber boasted a roster of more than 1.500. The meeting opened with invoca- tion by Rev Willlam A. Ross, pas- tor of the Jirst Baptist church. This was followed by the reading of the ¥inal reports of the each report being the {mmediate occasion of sudden and prolonged bursts of cheers, Following this, a treop of New Britain boy scouts with their colors marched into the dining room. Their leader, a straightforward little chap, stepped in front and addressed the gathered workers, and especially Congressman Reed, He told of the ideals of the Boy Scout organization and how these ideals 8o clogely coincide with those of the Chamber of Commerce. He spoke of the honors which every Boy Scout was £ eager to attain and said that one of the groatest of these. was the name “Eagle Scout,” He further stated that there were three scouts present who had re- cently merited this title and ask=d‘ a# a special honor that the medals be presented by Congressman Dan Reed, The congressman the wishes and after commending the boys fob their guccess and read- inz them the entire code of conduct of a famons athlete, dead, A the eagle scont medals on the three The boys thus honored were Frederte Lockwood ind Willlam Baker of troop 4, Cen- ter church, and Willam Tailon of troop Trinity Methediet, church Congressman Reed finished by com- plimenting the fathers of on their sone’ carly suc When the boy scouts ha { Dyson and after [ nis observations In other eities, and particularly in Ia., and of the need of the Chamber of Com- merce for a building of its own, fn President Andrews of his responded o now pinr teouts three hoy 1 1eft aroge telling of | oy City formed gift The pr thankin sident respond Mr, Dyson for the geners prompted the gitt 1 promptiv, m captains, | Mol i ¥T. | 1o appreciate for the new goal he had at th time set for tho members of same the organization, Make Tt 1,500, T Congressman Reed 1 fitst that fthe ep rigt Jrking, never um, had 1 1) H‘ said mu there 1 th thi ool Urges s next, He 1,1 were ping until t passe 1500 mark. enough hey yet unap- wehied to gai it when next Reitatn he « flonrishin xpects to most g orzanizatic ereated by Mr. building of Its nrge Il have a fine one. an a hgressman he st that the fiy rald Britai hd in Andrews Tands Presidont Andrews oke AfAressing s remarke In the matn Need then | Donala " | bourne, BN R i umz:::mmmmwmmnmmmmmmmm Wednesday' Spec1al Purchases el o s s o . - Ladies’ Imported Irish Linen 'Kerchiefs 15¢c Made with 1/16-inch hem; a fine count; Irish import; regular 19¢ each.
