SOLDIER WARNS CORRUPT PORTUGAL 'rank Letter Says Hungry Army Won't Stop Revolution lishon, April 17.—A frank letter from & Portuguese army offcer, written in reply to s general query 18 to what the army would do in case of a popular uprising, has fo- cussed attention on a very serlous situation, The writer, Captain Jose | de DBarros Norfolk, says the army, dying of hunger, would remain in- active éxcept in the face of a na- tional danger, .His letter in part follows: ““The soldlers are halt starved and the officers are povertystricken un. der their gilt brald. The recom- pense to the army for putting down strikes and rising and reducing the turbulent classes to order is the misery in which officers and their familics live, and hunger among tho men, The indifference of the poli- ticlans will be rewarded by our fold- ing our arms in our barracks and letting the people outside kill each other. We are tired of so much talk, 80 much moral misery, s9 much rob- bery and exploitation, The army has three paths before it, and will shortly have to choose the one to follow, “First, to let itself die slowly of | hunger; second, to fold its arms in | the face of any revolution that does not threaten the nation itselt or the | republic; third, to drive out all poli- + ticians, cleanse all the posts occu- | pied now by thieves and traitors, | and hand the administration of the | | state to Portuguese citizens who de- | serve that name.” MARCH REALLY THE WINDIEST MONTH But Greatest Recorded Velocity Occurred in January Washington, April 17. — March | of all months in the year still con- | tinues to hold the record for high | winds, although the biggest wind | ever actually meastired blew across Mount Washington on a January | day. | This record was made Jan. 11, | 1878, when a velocity of 186 miles | an hour was recorded on an official | anemometer there, But high winds | reach their greatest number in March, particularly in the country | cast of the Mississippi river. ‘ “Haw strong was the wind” is a | question often asked after a de- structive storm. The American Na- ture assoclation says the answer is | liable to be misleading, for it is al- | most always ated in terms of | speed rather than force, The force | of a wind can be indicated acurate- ly by saying what preseure it ex- crts in pounds per square foot upon a surfaceiat right angles to its path. | This pressure varies approximately | quare of the speed. hus a wind of 20 miles an hour | blows about four times as hard as | one of ten miles an hour and a wind of 30 miles an hour blows about nine times as havd as one of | ten miles an hour. In such storms as the one whic swept through Ilinois the upru ing alr attains a speed of-2,000 feet | or more a minute. | h | ST, PAUL OFFERS SHATING IN JUNE Artiical oe Also to Be Used o Skiing .
