NEW DESIGN FOR STONE HOUNTAIN Augustus Lukeman, New Sculp- tor, Eliminates Borglum’s Work New York, April 17.—An entirely now design for the Stone Mountain onfederate memorlal fear Atlanta, Ga,, 18 belng created here in the studlo of Augustus Lukeman, the sculptor who has succeeded Gutzon Borglum ‘as artist in charge of the work which will transform the | granite mountain into a monument to the heroes of the south, Mr, Lukeman announced last night on being Informed of his appointment that the work already done by his predecessor would be “eliminated.” Mr. Borglum dreamed of a host of Confederate soldlers streaming across the sheer face of the cliff and fccussing on a gigantie figure of Lee, but unless he can overthrow the committee in charge of the work it ts probable that his vision will never become a reality, for his idea has been wholly discarded by Mr, Luke- man, The models which Mr., Borglum destroyed for fear they would be | turned over to mere “stone cutters” | (will not be used by Mr, Lukeman, and even the figure of Lee on which much work has been done will be obliterated, he said, It {s under- stood, however, that Mr, Borglum is completing his models and intends to make a final appeal from the committee to the Daughters of the | Confederacy. The new design will be Mr, Luke- | man’s own and will include not only | the figures of Confederate generals | on the mountainside, but also a hall | of fame below. Discussing his plans, | Mr. Lukeman said: My first purpose will be to make preliminary sketéhes and after they have been approved to go on with the working models, which will be about one-half of the full size of the figures in the groups. By autumn I hope to have from 20 to 30 carvers on the mountain working on the central group of the long pageant.” Mr. Lukeman plans to make a central group of the figures of Lee, | semble a group of the finest stone | carvers in the country, and hopes to |a number of boys who recently be- | HAT\ for the Bobbed Hair ‘Girls GREAT AFTER EASTER SALE 1,000 TRIMMED HATS MATRON HATS \ MISSES’ HATS SPORT HATS GOldenblum S Spe‘c‘;ahze Follow the Crowd + TOMORROW AT 9 A. M. Jackson, Davis, two other generals yet to be chosen, and a standard bearer, At the mountain’'s base will be & circular hall of fame, with 13 columns, Entablatures between the columny will tell the story of the memorial in English, French, Ger- man, Greek and Latin, The hall will be approached by a flight of steps, each of which will represent a state of the unlon, Mr, Lukeman explained that the hall of fame will consist of a large cireular bullding, 160 feet long, 60 feet deep and 60 feet tall, which will he cut out of the solid rock at the base of the mountain, The 13 columns, representing the 13 states of the Confederacy, will be tied to- gether, with a large band on which the inscriptions will be wovén, Be- tween the columns will be earved the names of famous Americans and of subscribers to the memorial, The steps approaching the hall of fame will be flanked by balustrades on which will be two great tripods from which, on ceremonious oc- caslons, incense will ascend through the hall to Stene mountain, At the end of the lagoon at the base of the steps will be two re- cumbent figures, one of an unknown Confederate soldier, the other of an unknown Unlon soldler, clasped in death, Mr. Lukeman said he will as- start actual work on the mountain by fall. The central group of eques- trians he expects to have finished within & year and a half after this work 1s begun, The work on the approaches and on the hall of fame will be done at the same time, so that the entire project may be com- pleted simultancously. SWIMMING OLA! Realizing that there must be quite came members of the Y. M. C. A. who can not swim a stroke, the physical department is making a special canvass of its entire boys’ membership for the purpose of en- rolling the non-swimmers into | classes which are due to start soon. During the past year 48 boys and | six men were taught to swim. The swimming pool at the Y. M. C. A. is about 45x18 feet, running | from a depth of three feet at one | end to seven feet.
