STRIPLINGS BEAR " BRUNT OF BATILE Seasoned War Horses Realized Futilty of Warven Appeal | BY GEORGE H. MANNING. (Washingtos Bureau of N, B, Herald) Washington, D, C, March 17— The battle iu the senate over the | right of President Coolidge to have | his way in appointing Charles B, Warren as attorney general witnes- sed the unusual spectacle of four | newly elected senators commanding | the forces supporting the president [ with the old time, tried and battle- | scared leaders taking a passive part and uttering no word to support | thelr party chieftain, | In complete contrast to the battle | array in important contests that have waged in the senate in the past the | light over the confirmation of War- ven saw the administration forces led by 8enator Hiram Bingham of Con- necticut, Guy Goff, of West Virginla, I'rederick M., Glllett of Massachu- | sctts and William M. Butler of Mas- | sachusetts, | Of this quartet Butler was ap- pointed to the senate in November, Bingham came to the senate in January and Goff and Gillett became | members only ten days ago. Dut these four new republican members made the speeches in the scnate in support of Warren's confir- mation, which was Jost by 46 to 39, while the old guard look on silently realizing that the jig was up and that speeches would be of no avail in try- ing to stem the tide against the cur- | rent of democratic insurgent and progressive votes that was determin- cd to thwart the president’'s will to ippoint whom he pleased as mem- bers of his cabinet. The old timers had done their ut- most last week when Warren's ap- Charles B. Warren, for appointment as attorney general is genulne, that Warren s unfit for the position and that he ls engaged In some form of business that makes him unfit, de- clared Senator Bingham, “Thls creates a false impression. Notwithstanding the efforts of War- ren’s opponents to dig up everything they could find against him, they have been unable to find anything {n the last ten or twelve years except whut redounds to his credit; that he has been a servant of the United States in important matters, that he has been a most distinguished and successful diplomat representing us in forcign parts with great distinc- tion, that he has talsen our part as the attorney for the United States government in speclal dealings with forelgn countries; that he is one of the most distinguished lawyers in this country. “They can not find anything clse, 50 what do they do? In their anx- fety to discredit this admin ation they go back 20 or 25 '8, and find things that happened in 1897 and 1602, and 1904 and 1906, and letters are read here on the floor of the senate in such a fashion us to c te the impression that they were written last week, or “u couple of years ago. It sounded like 1922 when some of them were read, and the impression was gained that this man s engaged in that kind of business, and so forth, whereas the actual fact is that they can find nothing since 1907, even granting for the sake of argument what they found before that “Aa a matter of fact, Mr, Have- meyer, whose letters have been | quoted, died in 1907, There is no evi- dence that T have seen presented be- fore this body that Mr. Warren has represented the sugar trust recently, or ‘en ed’ In this kind of business." As a matter of fact the real issuc is this: The democratic party. in the last campaign had a candidate who was a representative of big business in its best.sense, A candidate for pointment was rejected 41 to 40 and | against their advice and judgment Presidént Coolidge, listening to the words of Senator Butler, a new mem- ber, had sent Warren's appointment to the senate again. The old timers looked on without saying a word with an air that spoke \olumes to the effect that they knew the Warren appointment could not e put through, that they had advis- J agalnst it, but that if the presi- ient listening to the unsophisticated ! liutler knew Dbetter than they did, (well then, let him try it, Senators Goff of West Virginia and tillett of Massachusetts, until March i speaker of the house of represen- ilives and one of its members for rer 30 years, delivered their matd- n speeches in support of Warren ind their contention that the presi- Ient had the right to appoint whom 1e pleased to his cabinet. But Senator Hiram Bingham deliv- red the most forceful address of the lay in support of Warren. ']hn 'pponents of Warren had drl\pd nto his activities for 20 years, Blng- am asserted, but had found nothing | ut what redounded to his credit. l “Benator James Reed of \fl!souri as produced in this chamber the | mpression that this opposition to | Look for the Green Cards Tomorrow i It BEATS... 8 representing it now, or is now whom I have the highest rogard Andl respect; but within their own ranks, there were things sald about thelr candidate that caused trouble, “Here i a case where a president who recelved the greatest majority ever known in the hlstory of the country, whose whole record ia one In favor of law and order and has selected’a man to help carry out the laws and preserve order, Here 18 a man against whom not even the most brilllant senators on the other side have been able to bring out anything recent, But they have had to go back long beyond any statue of limitations to bring up things In which they have sought to make us believe he is now engaged, Here la a man who is fitted for this post by every test that we can apply at the present time, who the president as- surcs us is the best man he can find to prosccute those who break the law; and we find a very curious state frs—a deslre on the part of those on the other side of the alsle to join unanimously together to see to it that the president shall not have in his council the man whom he thinks best fitted to hold the post of attorney general."” W. L. MORGAN LODGE NOTE Washington L. Morgan lodge, No. 71, K. of I, will confer the rank of knight on a class of candidates at a meeting tonight. The Pythian Trio, consisting of Henry Kristopher, Arthur Hayes and Samuel I Cole, will provide the entertainment, William Hurst, who recently ap- peared at the Red Army banquet and recited his version of “The Shooting of Dan McGrew,” will re- peat it at the first annual whist of the lodge on March 24.
