REPEATS ARGUNENT FOR AR SERVICE Mitchell Reiterates Helplessness ol Ships Against Attacks Madison, Wis,, March 17.—~Declar- ing that warships were helpless against an alr attack, Bfigadier Gen- cral Willlam Mitehell - in a publie address here ‘last night relterated his arguments for greater develop- ment in the alr service, accompany- ings his statements with motlon pictures of alr accomplishments. “Naval officers had no idea that an alr attack could be as effective as we provéd it to me,” General Mitchell . sald, “and when they saw their battleships being sunk within a period of minutes, they hardly knew what to think. “When one considers it costs ADVANCE STYLES FOR SPRING F 1I'S $60,000,000 to $70,000,000 to bulld & modern battleship and about $10,000,000 more a year for upkeep and that an alrplane can sink a ship in a fow minutes, it seems llke & waste of money to bulld ships. Twenty years from now water de- fense vessels will be confined to sub- marines or submersible vesscls of some type, for modern ships have no protection against air attacks. “The most vulnerable spot on a ship is its bottom, An alr attack is able to reach a ship in this place through the explosion of air bombs 75 to 100 feet under water. Concus- slon of water againit a ship's sides loosens plates and a direct hit puts on the finlshing touches.” Plctures of the sinking of the battleships Virginia and New Jersey by an alr aftack were shown, Gen- eral Mitchell explained that the at- utes, he saild. General Mitchell also produced on the screen a short showing, he sald, that there was but a comparatively small area in the middle of the Atlantic ocean that was safe against present alr attacks, BUILT ON VALUE—GROWING ON VALUE r—_*_——“—‘j Rothfeder’s l 378 Main Street t Sprin The woman or miss who tack was staged after a flight of 175 | miles seaward from Cape Hatteras. | Both ships were sunk in five min. | Ing Emphasize Beauty and Economy NEW SPRING FROCKS basing his conelusions on non-stop filght distances already made by planes, . “Virtually all nations of the world except England, Japan and the United States have ceascd. ex- pending great sums on bullding bat- tleships, and even England is equip- ping all new vesscls as alrplane car- riers,” he continued, “Nations are not going to give up their means of de- fense, but they are willing to give up uscless parts of that defense. “Alrcraft is developing more rap- idly than anything else today and with awakeness to it possibilitics on the part of a nation s essential if that nation would maintain fts place among the powers of the world, In addition to its value as a defensive agent, alrcraft has a wide use com- merelally and industrially.” The speaker urged a single de- fense unit plan, with the army, avy and alr divisions on an equal basis, and predicted that such an arrange- ment ultimately would be adopted by the United States.
