LAUDS ESTHONIAN TENACITY ANDLAW l. Rvenol, League Socmury, Ptys'fribnu o Peaple teval, Eflhonll. Feb, 27,—~Warm tribute to the tenacity patriotism and “will to law and order”" which , inopired “the Esthonlan people to build a state in such a short time, Esthonla has had but four years of peace, was paid by M. Avenol, dep- uty general-secretary of the League of Nations who'has just left Reval ' at the head of a special economic committee whigh visited Esthonia in behalf of the league, M. Avenol also praised the meth- ods that enabled Esthonia, without forelgn credits or assistance, to put her Rnancial house in established order and to pass through the seri- ous crisis of 1923 unscathed, Es- thonia he sald, had adapted the old adage “Help thyself, then Provie dence will help Thee,” into “Help thyself, then the great financikrs of the world will also be willing ta ’1(‘|D." An interesting glimpse of Esthon- fan aims gnd ideals is given in an interview with Karl Pusta, the for- eign minister. “Having ourselves lived so long under the oppression of foreign rule it has heen easy for us to fall in with the principles laid down by the late President Wilson as to the minorities living in our country,” the minister said. “Of our own free will we have embodied in our constitution various safeguards for the minorities; they have even the right to speak their own lan- guages in parliament, and German and Russian deputies already have availed themselves of this privilege. “In spite of the 200 years we lived under their rule; we never mixed with the Russians; their mentality was always foreign to ours. We hope to be good neighbors with them, but our intimate family life we hawe reserved for the nations of our own race and culture, the Iin- nish, Li an, ' Polish and we hope in time, thv. Lithuanian, I firmly |* believe that a small nation like ours should unite ‘with other smaller countries, not necessarily in a poli- tical sense, but in cultural and eco- nomic cooperation.” “Let me say,"” Mr. Pusta declared in conclusion “that none of the Bal- tic states has any aggressive policy in the back of her mind. We are essentially a group working for peace. On the other hand, I feel sure that should any of the friendly tes be attacked without on by some other power, of us would join in her de- TROU SHALT NOT NOW ‘THOU SHALT Dr. Guthrie Writes New Version of Ten Commandments New York, Feb. 27.—A “positive” | version of the ten commandments in which “thou shalt” is substituted for “thou shalt mot” has been writ- ' ten by the Rev. Dr. Norman Guthrie, Episcopal minister, whose church, $t. Mark’s-on-the-Bouwerle, - has been the scene of ritual dancing by barefoot girls of which Bishop Man- ning disapproved. Dr. Guthrie’s ten commandments are nearly 3,000 words long. They dre designed, he says, to meet the reguirements of modern scientific al. spiritual development. 'hou shalt honor, worship and realize the union with'the one im- minent and transcendent God that unifies the universe,” says Dr. Guth- rie's code, “Thou shalt reverently recognize and acknowledge that one, in all forms, however backward and re- pugnant they may be to thee, {f those forms are to others sincerely acceptable and the only symbols in- teltectually and emotionally effective for thy fellowmen.” Subscribers to the decalogue of the rector of St. Mark’s would not only be permitted to worship graven jmages if they desired, but they also would be enjoined from interfering with the worship of such idols by others: Dr. Guthrie's ment red “Thou shalt make thy conduct koep pace with and fully affirm the most recent ascertained knowledge. “Thou shalt provid and agree with othefs thereto, for holy places and times. As to honoring parents: L t give life and foster life/’ writes Dr, Guthrie; “and honor pas- sionately love and develop person- alily, wheresoever thou seest life evolving, and personality capable of fourth command- “Thou DIZZY? Danish Court Overrules Trial-less Internment Copenhagen, Feb. 27.—The recent ! action of the miniftry of justice in | ordering interned, without further trial a prisoner who had served four terms for immoral conduct, has roused a demand for more | specific legislation dealing with this | class of offenses. The superior court of Copenhagen rules that the ministry of justice had no authori- ty under the law to impose intern- ;ment without trial, and ordered the man released and compensated to the ount of 1,200 erowns, The case created a profound sen- ‘eation throughout Denmark and numerous prominent persons have been outspoken in their approval of drastic action.-with regard to offend- ers aganst public morality, The author, Olga FEggers, in an open letter declared that *‘the whole pegy ple ought to send the ministry 2 vote of thanks.” ‘0][!\1(, LAK TRAIL 0ld Prospectors Discover Crater of Scientific Value, Seward, Alaska, Feb. 27.—W, R. The crater was named Anjakchak after the river ris- ing within its walls. The crater is similar in size and shape to that of Crater Lake, in Ore- gon, but differs in liaving a compara- fively small body of water on its | floor. The rim is circular in outline ,and has a diameter of six miles. A mountain summit that forms the range is from 1,000 to 1,500 feet |above the bottom of the crater and | is unbroken except for a gorge from which the river flows. Within the crater one cinder cone rises 1,000 feet above the general level of the floor and there are a number of sma.ller cones, FIGHTING OPIUM The Hague, Holland, Teb. 27.— Dispatches from Deli, Sumatra, tell of remarkable cures of the opium habit effected by the American Methodist ~ Mission among the Chinese fishing population there. The cure, which is administered internally, takes a fortnight. That the victims are conscious of their vice and only to anxious to be de- livered from it is shown by the fact that the tiny mission hospital is booked up for more than six months ahead, and it is declared that 240 Jpatients, most of them complete opium wrecks, have been wholly cured, says the Deli Courant. Several localities in the Duth Eas Indies have petitioned the colonial | government to start this American | treatment in other places where the habit prevails. 666 Is » Prescriptior prepared for Colds, Fever and Grippe It in the most speedy remedy we know | Preventing Pneumonia Breath Bad?
