B GOVT. ARSEMAL NOW UNPRODUCTIVE $400,000,000 Worth of Property Lies in Disuse in Rock Island —_— Rock Island, I, Feb, 13.—Four hundred milllon dollars’ worth of property lles in comparative disuse at the Rock Island arsenai here. Largest of the government arse- nals in the United States, Rock Island during the World war em- ployed 13,000 workmen and gained the reputation as the largest arse- nal in the world, the Krupp fac- tory in Germany having been dis- mantled. Col. D, M. King, commandant, said he has no informatlon of any plan to increase activity at the arse- nal, although during the presiden- tial campalgn it was suggested by candidates that congressional ac- tion be taken which would permit the carrying on of productive work on the basis which existed prior to the war. “Vast quantitles of ordnance stores produced by all government arsenals and by private industries throughout the east as' a result of war activities,” Col. King sald, “re- sulted in a large surplus of such material on hand, a quantity suf- ficlent for the needs of the army | at its reduced strength for some time, Very little productive work is now. being done. Operatlons are confined principally to work of an expeérimental nature in connection with the design of artillery material and repair of equipment turned in from the field. At present there are slightly less than 600 employes. The percentage of capacity at which | the'arsenal facllities are now being | utlfid may be stated as approxi- | y'5 to 10 percent. 6 arsenal as it stands today represents a valuation, at a very consgrvative figure, including stores mal rairn—— v of FINE RUGS in the city to select from on hand for issue and for manufac- turlng, purposes, of nearly $400, 000,000, Approximately $50,000,000 of this figure is represented In the value of its bullding and equip- ment."
