0 BANKS WIL GVE 00T 270000 ommercial and National to Distribute Christmas Checks Christmas s coming, and local Perchants and buyers allke can a M4y hehr the jingling of the be ok Et. Nick's sleigh—or rather the Jingling of $270,000 In thelr collec- tive pockets. This is the sum which 'will be released by two local banks ext month to the 10,000 thrifty per- sona who jolned thelr Christmas clubs. This is New Britaln money, earned in New Britain factories and stores by New Britaln people, deposited in New Britain banks, and now to be spent in New Britain stores. That this last is true has been evi- denced in past years by the endorse- ments of the backs of the Christmas | club checks. The banks, in checking these over, have found that a great rity of the Christmas club checks have been turned in to local merchants, keeping the money in eiroulation, in this city. This large tota) has been reached by slow and oonsistent eaving of small amounts each week, amounts wihch other- 'wise: would probably have been spent on candy, theaters and other luxuries during the year, leaving the average citizen with no slzable fund with which to observe the proper Christmas spirit that “It is better to give than to receive.” The Commercial Truast on Mon- day, December 1, will mall checks amounting to $160,000 to 5,750 peo- ple. The New Britain National bank will follow on Thuraday, December 4, when $110,000 will be malled on [about 4,000 separats accounts. Fig- ures and dates are not yet avallable on the New Britaln Trust Co., the other local bank which conducts euch a club, NO ENOW REMOVAL FUNDS Money appropriated for the re- jmoval of snow and ice has been ex- Jpended for other purposes hy the board of public works and the da. partment must be given additional unds, the board of finance and taxa- fon has been advised. 1f a heavy torm comea before funds are ap- propriated, the department will be aught without money to engage rucks and labor.
