- VENERABLE FANES VICTIMS TO BORER Beams of Ancient Buildings Be- ing Gradually Eaten Away Peterborough, England, Oct, 3.— Petérborough Cathedral, the great Norman fane which was spared hy Henry VIII when he was demolish- ing church property because it "held the grave of his first wife, the ill-starred Katharine of Aragon, has fallen a vietim of the death-watch beetle, The 800th anniversary of the toundation of this structure, whose west front has often been described as the finest portico in Europe, was celebrated ten years ago. Now it has been discovered that the death- watch beetle, for how long it is un- known, has been allently eating awawthe interior of the great oaken beams in the roof spaces of the choir, nave and transepts, So great have heen the heetle’s ravages that the whole roof structure is in danger of collapse, The dean of the Cathedral has launched an appeal for $50,000 to remedy the defect. Probahly an even greater sum will be needed for the work. This Is not the first ancient English structure to be endangered by the death-watch heetle. Ite ravages have been discovered In doz- ens of the old Tudor and Norman raofs. Wastminster Hall, buiit by William Rufus, was reopensd only last year, having been closed for eight vears while craftemen replaced the work of the mediaeval carpen- ters which had been gradually eaten away by the destructive beetle The roof of Henry VIIT's banquet- ing hall at Hampton Court Palace is now undergoing similar treatment for the eame dafect. Tt all shows what constant vigilance has to be exerciged in preserving and renew- irg the ancient English fabrics There & hardly an English cathedral which ‘has not a force of masons constantly at work replacing decay- | ed and weather-worn stone I April 15 the mon per tornada crops BOLDSMITHS 46 BROAD RT.
