Manning . retained the golf championship of the Shut- tle Meadow clup yesterday by de- teating his brother, DRvid R. Man- ning in a long, bitter struggle which carried to the 39th hole by the pectacular rally. The win- ner thereby captured a leg on the director's trophy, which has been substituted for the president's cup as the symbol of the club cham- plonship. That his victory was no accident or flash in the pan is evi- denved by the fact that Clarence Manning also captured the 1921 and 1923 tournaments, Two odd coincidences cropped up yesterday. David Manning won the second hole of the morning round with a birdie' 8, while Clarence captured the same hole in the same way in the afterneon. Clarence captured the Sth hole in the morn- ing by laying a stymie, but David evened things by following suit at same hole in the afternoon. player turned in three birdies. D. R. Manning took the lead at Each CLARENCE W. MANNING the second hole in the forenoon, but Clarence shot a birdie 2 on the- 6th and evened the count, Going into the vah at the 8th and shooting winning golf for the remainder of the round, leading 3 up at noon. Going out in the afternoon, David battered vainly to wear down. this lead, but Clarence increased it to 5 up when .there were but 12 holes more to play., David cut into this and reduced it to 3 again at the turn., : Clarence took the 28th, but the challenger won the 31st and 82nd. Beaten again on the 33rd and 8 down with but three to play, David made his ldst stand and took the 36th, 37th and 38th by spectacu- lar golf, coming out of a bad lie on the 37th to reach the green and holing out on the 38th by caroming off his opponent's ball. In spite of his brilliant comeback, however, D. R. Manning went down to defeat, for on the extra 39th hole Clarence shot a perfect 4 for victory., The cards: Morning round:— 5343544443676 D. R.
