Gerry Southington, springfield, (GIBBONS FAVORITE | INSATURDAY BOUT Britishers Expect He Will Deleal‘ Jack Bloomfield By The Assaciated Press | London, Aug, 8,~Tom Gibbons, the American light heavyweight, is still the favorite in the betting to win over Jack BDloomfield of England In their mateh tomorrow in the great Wembley stadium, although the odds on the invader shortencd considerably yepterday, The advance sale thus far totals some 60,000 seats, testifying to the great intorest in the mateh, The capacity of the stadium Is 127,000 and If this is reached tomorrow it will set a new world's record for attendance at a pugilistic affair, One of the pre-arranged features of the fight has been eliminated through the sudden action of the British war office in forbidding the participation of soldiers whom the promoter, Major Wilson, had engaged to act as ringside stewards. . The sol- diers, mainly belonging to the Royal Welsh I"usileers, which regiment now is taking part in the “pageant of the Empire” at the Wembley Exposition, had volunteered their services, telling Major Wilson, who commanded one battalion of their regiment in the war, that they were willing to serve with- out pay if allowed to see the fight, The promoter arranged that they ke eployed as stewards, promising them the gratuities each received. Some of the soldiers of the guards regiment also were engaged, and all were keen on the job. Yesterday, according to the Daily Mail, came a surprise order that none of the sol- diers could be allowed to act as steward or in any other capacity in connection with the fight. Both Gibbons and Bloomfleld are engaging only in light work, Maving completed their serious training. Their handlers say they are in “the pink” for the fight, which is sched- uled to begin at 4 p. m. Special pro- visions have been made to cover the ring in the event of rain, similar shel- ter being provided also for most of the spectators, BESSE LELANDS PLAY MANCHESTER HERE SAT. Game fo he at St. Mary's Field—Sun- | day's Contest Will be in { Meriden. | The Besse-Leland nine will meet the Manchester state leaguers at St. Mary's field tomorrow afternoon in what should be rip snorting game. The Besses seem to have hit a fast stride of late and are playing a good, snappy brand of ball. They are hit- ting well, fielding well and their de- fense work from a battery standpoint is very effective. The usuval lineup will take the field for New Britain. On Sunday afternoon the Besses go down to the neighboring town of Mer- iden for a clash with the State Guard team. This aleo is a state lenguei game. With his leg in a cast and weighted, Earle Sande, famous jockey, quotes the Sallies and says a man may be down but never out. He predicts that he will ride again. FALCONS, SOX AND PIRATES T0 PLAY ELIMINATION SERIES, STARTING SUN. | Winner Will Meet the Besse Leland City Champs in Three Game Series for Championship of New Britain — Falcons and Corbins Play First. At & meeting of the mana the Falcons, Corbin Ied Sox, Plrates and Hesse-Leland baseball teams held at the Y, M, C. A, last night plans were made for the playing of the city champlonship series this fall, Those present were John Cabay of the cons, Jack Tobin and Harold Corbin of the Corbin Red Sox, IFrank Me- Conn of the Besse-Leland team, and Charlie Miller of the Pirates, It was declded to play two three game elimination series to determine the team to clash with the Besse.Le. land team for the city championship. As the season is rapidly drawing to a close It was decided to start the series immediately, With this object in mind the first series will get under way Sunday when the Corbin Red Sox will clash with the Falcons in the first game of a three game serles, The winner of this series will clash with the winner of the city league. While the logical team looks like the Pirates to represent the city league, there is always a chance for a slip and Charlie Miller refused to commit him« self last evening as to his team's chances except to say that they have a two game lead with three games to play and expect to give a good ac- count of themselves in the remaining three games. The winner of the second thres game series will then play the Besse- Leland team in a three game series to decide the city championship. This series will probably not get under way until the first part of September. The plan to eliminate contenders was decided on after a lengthy dis- cussion and although it is to be ad- mitted that it has its weak points it seemed to the representatives of the variols teams that it was the only solution to the problem of deciding the city championship. It was advanced by some of the representatives of the teams last evening that in order for the Corbin or I"alcon team to take part in the city championship contest it will be neces- sary for them to win two three game serles, whereas in the order for the city league winner to take part-in the final series they will only have to eliminate the winner of the Corbin- Falcon series. During these serios games will probably be played Satur- day afternoons as well as Sundays. DR.
