He instructed the tele- phone girl to call the room number, She did and received no reply. The itor boy was told to go to the room. He reported that the door fas jocked, nc one answered his kyocks and the key was on the inside. Three times he went back and rapped, but to no avail, The telephone girl se- pured a rubber band and tied open the key so the phone in the room would ring continuously. By this time a feeling of nervous- ness began to permeate through the hotel, Visions of a suicide or even a murder flashed over the imagination of the hotel employes. The phone girl began to talk about calling the police. Bell boys tried to unlock the door and failed, Chambermaids huddled together in a frightened group, afraid to go too near and unwilling to go too far away, torn between the conflicting emotions of curiosity and fear, Two hours were consumed trying to arouse the un- arousable guest. Mr. Harwood, eclerk on duty, finally decided that someone must have gotten into the room with- out being seen, locked the door and gone to sleep, Summoning William Frazer, captain of bell boys, he in- structed him to *“get into that room, somehow, 1 don't care how, but get ele fn Mr. Frazer got In and as he opened the door and stooped to look under the bed, the maids with squeals of fright, rushad down the hall, “What was wrong there?” Inquired Mr, Har- “Not & thing,” replled Mr. the door was not locked and the knob, wood.
