Dunn has called a | special meeting of the police board for Friday, May 23, at which time & hearing will be given to police officers who ,according to the report of W. W. Leland, have not heen giving pro- per protection to Main street stores during the past few months. It is a rule in the police depart- ment that both the front and rear loors of business places shall be i i"" to ascertain if they P ked at least once during an's tour of duty at night. Ac ording to the complaint made to the | police board by Mr, Le the doors 'on his store were te only a few dmes during a period of several vights in which he had deteetives working in the building. He has agreed to proiide the boa! with written reports in proof of his state- ments and has also promis=i to have the detectives present at the hooring. Mr. Leland takes issue with tc po- ment in its claim that the ringi g of the burglar alarm ut his store early Thursday morning on two occaslons was due to an electrical or mechanical defect in the system. An spection of the system, he told a Herald man today, pr that it was | in perfect working order and could 1ot have been set off except by some Luman ageney. G. K. Spring of the Spring and Buckley company which instalied the alarm presented a similar argument, Mr. Spring claimed the system is as near perfection as an electrical de- | vice can be made and as his examina- tion of the apparatus following the sounding of several alarms at the store showed no defects of any kind, he too is positive that human agencies | were responsible for releasing the mechanism which started the bells in operation, Police officers elaim they arrived at the store within a few second of the sounding of the alarm yesterday morning and they feel certain a burg- \r would not have an opportunity to make a getaway without being heard They have reported similar conditions on a number of other occasions when the alarm went off, The alarm has frightenefl off burglars at least twice, evidence of the use of jimmies on the doors having been found after the bells brought the police to the scene, Mr. Leland claima that the busi- ness section of New Britain 1s under policed and in addition to presenting lis case to the police board regard- ing the alleged fallure of officers to | try his doors he will suggest that ad. ditional officers be detalled for Main stract work, HOTCHKISS DIVIDEND May 16.— The Hotch ‘0., Which was in the er from Vebruary 1, 1024, pald yesterday Kholders the regular dividend of 33 per cont imulated dividends for constituting a total of $35, Torrington, kiss Brothers and th This was the first dividend pay.
