oecoid Secticn L INFGW GRAND OPERA HOLDS GERMANS' INTEREST Practically Every Town, Despite Hard Times, Has Its Theater Leipzig, March 14.—There is scarce- ly a town of any size in Germany that has not a state theater or munieipal opera house, and nearly all of these have continued to operate during and since the war despite the financial ups and downs of the government and cit- ies. Officials have always taken the view that one of the most practical ways of preventing conditions from going from bad to worse is to keep the places of amusement open to the public. The idea, it is pointed out, is two-fold in its purpose. It keeps the artists busy and gives the people op- portunity to attend an opera or a play during which to forget their troubles | even though only for a few hours, The musical education of Germany bas been in progress for many gen- erations. There is a piano in nearly every home where there are children. Germany perhaps has more teachers of music than any two other coun-| tries of Europe. In early days the rulers of the several component king- doms were the chief patrons of music and a majority of the great compos- +1s at some time in their careers were i the services of a royal master.
