TONNELS HELP IN AERDNAUTIC GOURSE Miniature Archways Part of Lab- oratory Equipment of U, of M. Ann Arbor, Mich., Dec. 7—Tunnels through which wind wiil die into & gentle zephyr or roar into a “double- barreled cyclone” gith a velocity of 500 miles an hour, are part of the laboratory equipment for the Uni- versity of Michigan's courses in aero- nautics engineering. The tunnels, ac. cording to Prof. Felix W. Pawlowski, in charge of the aeronautics course, are the most efficient vet provided for testing wind currents and other atmospheric conditions met in flying. The tunnels for the gentle bree: and for higher velocity up to 150 miles an hour are completed and in operation. The “double-barreled cy- clone” equipment has not been in- stalled. The “wind tunnels,” Prof. Pawlowskl believes, are most valuable In the Instruction of aeronautical principles, but their construction was not easy. Because of the force of a 150-mile wind, it was necessary to Install a series of doors glving access to the tunnel chamber. In each door, 70 feet high by 2 feet wide, is a small valve, To enter, the valve of the outside door is opaned, and the per- son enters. The door is then closed and the second door is opened when the alr In the two rooms is stable. This operation is continued through three chambers. The tunnels are so arranged that most of the experiments are prepared outside and wheeled into the labora- tory winds, which are “manufactured” by airplane propellers attached to mo- tors of varying power. Michigan was one of the first uni- versities in America to offer a course in aeronautics engineering, the first classes being called in February, 1915, Four men attempted to graduate in 1915, when the need of men with aeronautical training was keenly feit, but only two degrees were issued. Only one other school, the Massachu- setts Institute of Technology, offers & degree at the end of its aeronautics courss, according to Prof. Pawlowski. There are several other institutions, however, where the science of avia- tion 1s taught. Fourteen courses are offered at the university here, beginning with a gen- eral course on the theory of aviation. Other branches of the subject taught | include the design of propellers, de- sign of planes and motors, a labora- tory course in aerodynamics, courses | for the study of balloons, dirigibles und kites had advanced work for the study of alr conditions affecting ac- tual fiying. Consequently the moss, the qunl) grass which survives the climate of the jand north of the Arctlc Circle and the small birch and shrubs have the average amount of forage, The increase of tourist travel through Lapland as a result of new automobile roads has brought pros- perity to many Laplanders, Travel- ers are now leaving the excursion ships at various points in the Norwe- gian flords and inspecting the land of the midnight sun at close range. Tour- ing agencies have arranged camps on many ploturesque lakes overlooked by glaciers, and venturesome moun- tain climbers are wandering far away from the beaten trail. Like J Indians, the TLaps are more and more com- merm: the line of travel, Many of t are becoming professional Laps, and they reap a harvest in tour- 18t selling reindeer slippers and reind clothing to the visitors, This been an especlally good year for the Lapland souvenir dealers, as steamer traffio into the far north assumed pre-war proportions. Even the German shipping companies re- newed their excursions into the land of the midnight sun, Then the Gothenburg exposition at- tracted large numbers of Americans and Epglishmen who made the rail trip from South Sweden to the north- ‘ ern mountalns whose primitive popu- lation afford such a striking contrast | to the highly-developed elvilization | and culture of the southern half of | the Scandinavian peninsula.
