Perfects New Boiler” By The Associated Schenectady, Press, Dee. 5.—Power from mercury vapor, making possible a double vapor power plant in which turbines for generating electricity are driven both by mercury vapor and water vapor from the same fuel source, resulting in a gain of about 50 per cent in power per pound of fuel, is the outstanding achievement of a new boiler perfected by the Gen- 4 cral Eleetric company. The last great step in improving the efliciency of manufacturing pow- er was the replacement of the recip- rocating engine by the steam turbine. The invention of the mercury vapor boiler is regarded as a greater step in the progress of science. The modern steam turbine is about ® 40 per cent more efficient than the best reciprocating engines, hut ac- cording to W. L. R. Emmet, consult- | ing enginecr for the General Electric company and inventor of the new process, the mercury boiler is more than 30 per cent more efficient than the best steam turbine. The mercury boller is still considered an experi- ment, but like all great steps in ad- vance, time will be required to devel- op and perfect a system befor this procas can be cxpected to reflect on the operating costs of public utilities.
