Andrews, PRICE OF TURKEYS TAKES SHARP DROP (Larger Supply Than in Proviou Years Thought Responsible Promises to Call Conference of State|, For the first time in vears the price of turkeys for Thanksgiving w within reach of all when the market price practically collapsed this after- noon and turkeys could be purchased for almost any price the customer wanted to pay. In previous years according to Jos- president of the Chamber of Commerce and head of Andrews, Swift & Co., the price of turkeys has remainéd high because the demand far exceeded the supply. ‘This year it appears to be pretty much the other way and advance sale of turke t the point of production has not taken ecare of all the availahle supply. Because of this condition, poultry raisers with a surplus of tur- keys have shipped them to the larger cities to be sold for what they could bring. Carloads after carloads arriv- ing in the cities resulted in what ear- Iy this morning threatened to become a demoralized market. This condition gradually spread to the smaller towns and cities until this afternoon those who still had turkeys on hand were selling them for considerably than they asked yesterday for ducks and chickens. From 57 to 62 cents a pound ap- peared to be the prevailing price of turkeys in the city yesterday and this morning. This afternoon no two mer- chants were found who were getting the same price for the Thanksgiving bird. A canvass of six of the leading produce stores showed the price to |be as“low in some places as 45 cents 4 pound.
