Sullivan was VERY INFLUENTIAL Witness Says He Could “Fix” Any Gourt New York, Nov. 23.—Associates of “Mannie” Kessler, known as “the bootleg king,” boasted that he was so | |influential that he could “fix any !ugent. judge or jury,” in the city, it was declared at yesterday's session of {the trial of Kessler and 18 others charged with bootlegging. This was testified to by Frank J.| Hale, a general prohibition agent, whose preliminary investigation led «|to the arrest of the nineteen on spe- cific charges of having removed 5,195 cases of whiskey and champagne from a warehouse on forged permits. Hale told of preliminaty negotiations for an ostensible whisky purchase with three of the defendants, Jack and Al Gold- man, barbers, and Benjamin Katz. | "I asked Jack Goldman how Kessler s+ |got away with it,” Hale testified. “He itold me ‘Mannie is a regular fellow, he can fix anybody. He's influential downtown, and could fix any agent, Judge or jury.” The testimony brought a shout of laughter from all in court, including Kessler and the other defendants. Becher, one of the iefendants, had given Sullivan’s name to the company’s investigators as the purchaser of whisky from Hartman, | Goldman & Co., alleged owners of the iquors later withdrawn from the | warehouse, and the purchaser of the | bonds, as well. | The government contends that Hartman, Goldsmith & Co.,, was a| lummy liguor concern organized and | naintained by Kessler and his asso- ciates, IAPANESE COMMENT Press Declares Alien Land Taw in | U. 8 Is Against the Principles of Humanity—Oppose Discrimination 3y The Assoclated Press.
