Vesselmen point to the total coal and iron ore tonnage handled during May as evi- dence of the increased shipping ac- tivity over last year. The coal receipts for May, the first month of the 1923 navigation season, totaled approximately 1,600,000 tons. This is one of the largest monthly re- ceipts_total ‘on record, marine men gaid. The total ore tonnage shipped from the head of the lakes exclusive of Es- canaba, Mich,, was 5,741,791 tons. This 18 four times the tonnage handl- ed during May, 1922.
