RUSSIAN RELIGIOUS WAR The latter al- COMING T0 HEAD APRIL 19 DRAIN EUROPE'S MARTS More Works Have Been Purchased tho Past Year Than Any Since the War New York, April 10.—Americans purchased more art works in Europe last year than in any year since the beginning of the war, estimates for the year fixing the value of such im- portations at $53,000,000, Whether this increase is due to a growing in- terest in the United States ror mate- rial of this character, or to greater willingness on the part of FEuropeans to permit their treasures to pass to other parts of the world is a moot question, Importations of art works in the four years since the war have aver- aged $26,000,000 a year compared with approximately $17,000,000 an- nually during the period of the war, The total value of such imports since 1910, the year following that in which import duty was removed from works of art 20 years or more older, is about $350,000,000, an average of about $29,000,000 a year. It is estimated that at least $150,- 000,000 of the $175,000,600 worth of art works imported since the war came from Europe. England, France and Germany for many years were the largest contributors to these imports, but in recent years Italy has replaced Germany in the list. A large propor- tion of the art works are described as “more than 100 years old.” In 1921, the latest complete year for which figures are available, im- portation of art works “more than 100 years old,” aggregated $13,000,000 out of the total of $22,000,000. Original paintings, drawings and pen sketches formed $5,000,000 and the remaining $4,000,000 worth included statuary, stained and painted window glass, and a limited number of works produced by American artists residing tempo- rarily abroad. Moscow, April 10, (By Associated Press).—The fight of the Russlan church to save itself from total ex- tinction in the communist-directed nation wide campaign that is now | being waged against Orthodox wor- ship and organized religion of all kinds will center at Moscow on April 15 when the first all-Russian church conclave since the bolshevist revolu- tion is scheduled to meet. Higher clergy who believe it possi- ble for religion to exist side by side with the non-religious communist government have called the assembly with the consent and support of the government in hope of finding a way out of the difficulties that hedge in the church as a whole. The chief aim of the conclave as stated in the call is to reorganize the Orthodox Russian church in con- formity with the new conditions of life in Russia. “It must free the church from ma- terial dependence upon world cap- titalism and its representatives. It will also effect fundamental reforms in the church council and will guar- antee a leading role in church af- | fairs to those who are living from | productive labor.” The conclave is to be held at the | 1 magnificent gold-domed church of ’ Christ the Saviour.
