HALF MILLIONPAID - 10 PHONE FAMILY Employes of . N. E. 1. Co. Beng- fit From Sick and Disability Fund | Nearly $500,000 has been paid in sickness and accident disability cases, death benefits and pensions to em- ployes of the Southern New England Telephone company under the terms of that company's Employes’ Benefit 1"und, established 10 years ago. The Bell System was among the very first of the large corporations to | adopt a benefit plan for cmployes, maintained wholly by the business | and without cost to the employes. That this generous arrangement for | the financial aid of employes, dur-| ing disability from sickness or aceci- aent, in time of death aid at the pension period, has been an unqual- | ifled success and the outlay wholly worthwhile from a business stand-| point is the conviction of the Bell System management, In the March issue of the Tele- phone Bulletin, a monthly magazine | issued by and for employes of the| Southern ew England Telephone | company, is an interesting statement of how the employes’ benefit plan originated, how it is administered | and the large sum represented in benefits paid to the Southern New England's employes, is indicative of its real helpfulness to these workers| in time of need. | Fach Bell company maintains Lh:“ management of its benefit plan, but| the plan is identical in each com- pany in each mpany being the re- sult of exhaustive study of this sub- | ject by the Bell System. | Any corporation or large business having such a jlan may profit some| by studying the details of that in| force in the telephone business, the| essential parts of which as outlined in the Telephone Bulletin follow: The Employes’ Benefit und was established January 1, 1913, | The Southern New England ap- propriated $150,000 to establish this| fund for the payment of definite| amounts to its employes when dis- abled Dby accident or sickness or| when retired from service, in the event of death, to their dependent relatives. Interest is credited to the fund| semi-annually at the annual rate of 4 per cent on the average balance. At the close of each year the company brings the fund up to $150,000 by appropriating from fits, A Cup of Tea is easily and quickly made and the stimu- lating effect is as beneficial as pleacant, You can be sure of the best in freshness, in flavor and in aroma when you drink LIPTON'S TEA Largest Sale in the World income an amount equal to the dif- ference between the amount paid out and the interest earned on the average balances, Employes, from date of employ- ment, are eligible to benefits for accidents arising out of and in course of employment by the company. Accident disability benefits begin the day following the day on w'S:h the accident occurred. Two years or more of service is re- quired before any employe is eligible to sickness bencfits, No sickness disability benefits are paid from the fund until after the seventh day of absence. The company had six seven female pensioners on Decem- ber 31, 1922, and 39 males and 13 females qualified but not pensioned. Pensions are granted as follows: To men 60 years of age with 20 years service, To women 55 years of age with 20 years service. To men years of age with 25 years service. To women 50 years of age with 25 years service. To all men and women who have service records of 30 years or more, To all men and women who are permanently disabled and have service records of 15 years or more. The first two pensions mentioned are the only ones that can be claimed by employes as a right under the plan, the others are optional on the part of the company, but all such cases are generously treated. Proal is an agitator who |is now in jail here awaiting trial, | charged with inciting riot and rebel- lion against federal forces some six months ago. He is hailed as a mar- | tyr, and from his prison cell continues |to direct his extremist campaign, which includes open revolt against government as a minor proposition, | Radicalism in its raw state may be seen here every night when paraders Wrying in number from 300 to 3,000 march through the streets, singing revolutionary songs, jeering at specta- {tors on the sidewalk, yelling for Len- !ine, Trotzky and Proal, and in general | defying either city or state govern- |ment to halt them. The pictures of Lenine and Proal in | red frames and encircled by flaming banners are often found above the doors, Many enthusiasts have painted |the entire house in red, Mor the most part these decorations indicate that the inmates belong to the “Tenants' Union" which several months ago de- cided that no rent would be pald in view of the fact that the landlords re- fused to reduce them to a figure ac- ceptable to the union. It Is said that there are at least 5,000 members of the unfon here who have paid no rent for months, The question has been chécked up to President Obregon who has indicated that he Is not sympa- thetjc with the tenants Working Class Reprosented Every branch of the working class represented in this city is unionized. A former stevedore is now mayor of | Vera Cruz, The stevedores are the strongest, and recently succeeded in tying up port activities by strike, caus- ing immense losses to the city, Strikes and boycott are constant threats here. | Demands are made of merchants and industries and if they are not met, no matter how unreasonable, labor re- fuses to work or buy, Numerous em- ployers have closed down shop and, according to a statement made to the |correspondent by a reliable. source, Vera Cruz business has decreased 40 per cent within the past year. To meet the situation the = mer- chants of the city are attempting counter organization. An effort is be- ing made to secure the signatures of | 420 business men to a protective agreement. Under the plan, if exor- bitant demands are made on any member and strike or boycott is threatened all of the affiliated mem- bers would close their places of busi- ness, It is recognized that the only way this agreement could be made ef- fective is to secure 100 per cent adhe- sion. Washington, March 30, — Interest in the annual congress of the Daugh- ters of the American Revolution to be held here April 16 to 21 is cen- tering in the triennial election of of- ficers with a three-cornered contest on for the office of president-general. The candidates now in the field to succesd Mrs, George Maynard Minor, City Not Antagonistic Tt is an open secret that the city |government of Vera Cruz and the state government at Jalapa are not decid- edly antagonistic to radical activity in |this port city. The cne big check lagainst wholesale aggression is the federal government which is always ready to stop untoward events. It was ' |a clash between the radicals and icd-? |eral soldiers that landed Heron Proal | in jail, although many persons here | feel that his work is more effective now than it was before his arrest. He has even syndicalized the prisoners and on a recent national holiday suc- ceeded in staging a celebration, aid- ed by smuggled liquor, that almost ended in a jail delivery, The newspaper “Eli Dictamen,” one of the oldest in the republic, has been threatened with destruction many times and several weeks ago an at- tempt was made to force the editor 'to suspend publication following a |clash with the governor of the state. | It is understood that a hint from the national palace in Mexico City caused the governor to reconsider.
