O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, born the King of angels; (After each verse) O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him Christ the Lord. Bing, choirs of angels, sing in exul- tation, Sing all ye citizens of heav'n above; Glory to God in the Highest. Yea, Lord we greet Thee, born this happy morning Jesus, to Thee be glory giv'n Word. of the Father, now in flesh appearing, Music in “Twice 55 Community Bongs,” and "“Ye Old Christmas Songs and Carols.” J. READING. Story of the Carol. This sturdy, whole-hearted carol, sung with fits alternative text, “‘How Firm a Foundation” was the favorite hymn of Theodore Roosevelt. Hun- dreds of thousands of men, women and children throughout the world share this preference. The text of “O Come All Ye Faith- ful” is translated from a Latin hymn of the 17th century. The original words, beginning “Adeste fideles” are still frequently used. The English translation was made by Reverend Frederick Oakley about 1850. One of its names is the “Portu- guese Hymp'” and some investigators, claim it was written by a Portuguese chapel-master named Marcus Portu- | gal; some say it was first sung in the Portuguese chapel in London, but written by an English organist, John Reading. But whatever its true origin it is apparently one of the hymns which will ilve for all ages. NEWS FOR OLD VETS All Civil War Prisoners Are Likely to Reccive Increased Pensions in Time For Holidays. The marshal's intervention to present reprisals against the Natlonallsts after the assassination of the president Is sald greatly to have strengthened his position, and those in closest touch with the situation assert that he wii: now be able to muster such a ma- Jority as to remove his own objections to his candidacy. Marshal Pilsudski could have ob- tained a majority of the votes in the natlonal assembly election at whien Narutowicz was chosen, according to these dispatches, but his desire was for such support as would prevent the opposition saying he was the can- didate of a single party or the choice of the smaller factions. Being In doubt as to the size of the vote he could muster he declined to become a candidate, The situation now has changed, these advices add, and the indications are that he will have such a follow- ing as to oblige him to accept.
