80 FT, WALLS UNDER GHICAGO BUILDINGS Blue Clay Near Surface of Streets Is Like Putty Chicago, Dee. 20.—~Chicago's three “leaning towers," sky-scrapers bullt during the nineties, now are resting firmly on bed-rock foundations 80 feet below the surface, The three big office buildings, among the first in the skyscraper class, were orig- fnally built on plle foundations, and when the piles settled they were left noticeably out of plumb, An inquiry disclosed that all three had been jacked up while foundations were continued down to the solid rock, and that since the alteration ‘was made there has been no further settling. Chicago is underlaid by a solid silu- rian deposit of Niagara Iimestone, from 40 to 80 feet own, Over it Is a loose deposit of blue clay and other material, Some of the first skyscrapers, fol- lowing building methods then in wogue, were erected on forests of pil- ing, but the foundations proved un- suited to holding the immense weight of the big office structures, Chicago’'s builing laws limit the height of office buildings to 260 feet. It is impossible, geologists at the Unversity of Chicago say, to pile up enough weight within that limit to cause any shifting or slipping of the bed-rock foundation. The clay de- posits above the rock, on the other hand, are subject to a slight slipping movement. ‘Workmen who dug the 60 miles of freight subway under the logp streets found that blue clay had abbut the consistency of well wosked putty, and that it was impossible to. handle it by any ordinary methods. They finally solved the probleni by equip- ping steel bands three feet long with handles, like a cross-cut saw. Holding the blade in both hands, the workman would bend it into the form of a horseshoe and hack out the soft clay from the tunnel head- ing, while compressed air held back the mass until forms could be placed and the concreté walls poured. Students Take Signs And Autoists Are Angry Haven, Dec. 20.—'No park- Inx" slgns placed by the police on ‘ down-town streets have been disap- pearing of late. Ten of these were found today in Yale college students’ dormitories. What has made the po- lice angry is the fact that automo- bliists have been complaining against interference with their machines, or notices to appear in court, after park- ing cars where they saw no warning standards. The police have found that signs disappeared from the places L R. M. GUMPRECHT, THE WATKINS DEALER “Says" A woman's most prized possession is her beauty. Snow Puzzles Child (By ALICE STEWART), Cleveland, O.—What makes Christ- mas come in winter here? It always came in summer before —the hottest part. I can remember quite awhile, for I'm six years old, Last year, in La Argentina, where I was born, I saw Santa Claus. He was walking in the Plaza Mayor, in BuenossAires, with a sign. He looked so hot, in a red coat, and a fur. T had on my summer dress. The as- phalt was all soft. 1 asked him: “Es usted San Nichos las?"” 81, muchachita," quiere usted?"” So I told him all the things I want- he sald, ‘‘que Vanishing ‘ never | | ALICE STEWART. ed and he promised—'Muy bien, hasta la natividad And the night béfore Christmas he brought the things. I found them in my stockings the next morning when I waked up, only some ‘were so big they wouldn't go inside, so he piled them in a corner of the patio, and we shot firecrackers in the afternoon. My, but it was a hot/day—the hottest dal that summer, people said. I don't see why it's so cold here the time Christmas comes. The Hansen and other dry navy boats are maintaining a close vigil along the coast, hoping to net other vessels of the “Christmas cheer fleet" which put out recently from the Ba- hamas.
