s B WANTS CONNEGTICUT 0 RAISE TINBER Rustin F. Hawes, Relorestation Expert, Addresses Rotary Club Austin I, Hawes, state forester, told #he members of the New Britain Rot- wry club at the regular meeting held this noon at the Elks' ¢lub on Wash- ington street that he Is advocating a plan with the approval of the state park and forestry commission and the Connecticut forestry association, to ask the next session of the General Assembly when it convenos in Janu- ary for $100,000 with which to start a campaign to purchase 200,000 acres of woodland in Connecticut within the next 26 years for reforestation work, There are five sections of the state in which there is land desirable, Mr, | Hawes sald, The first section is along the Naugatuck valley from Winsted to Ansonia; the second, Middletown to the sound on both sides of the Con- necticut river; third, along the north- ern border of the state in the towns of Union, Somers and Willington as far south as Bolton; fourth, on the Rhode Island boundary from Thomp- son to the sound and fifth in the west- ern part of the state near Hartland. The state is not authorized to pay moré than $8 an acre for this land but it is expected that a great deal of the land can be purchased at that price. The speaker told the club mem- | bers that the area of the state Is about 3,000,000 acres and of this 1,- 500,000 acres are adapted to timber raising. Mr. Hawes told of the great need of roforestation work in Connecticut and mentioned that 40 per cent of the timber used in this state is brought here from the Pacific state, another 40 per cent from the southern states and' the other 20 per cent from the northeastern states with but a very small portion of the last percentage coming from Connecticut. At the next meeting of the club to be held Thursday, December 21, ‘baskets will be provided the Rotarians to be filled with Christmas ‘“‘goodies™ and to be distributed among the needy of the city., The meat will be given by the Rotary club but each Rotarian will be asked to fill his basket with other articles before the distribution is made. !
