A CONTRADIGTS RICE ONNIGHT AUCTIONS Chamber of Commerce Sustains Position Taken by “Observer” Regarding a communication in Monday night’s *“Herald” by Council- man Henry W. Rite, the Chamber of Commerce made the following state- ment yesterday afternoon: 22 December 12, 19 To the Editor of the “Herald": We note in last evening's issue of the *“Herald,” a communication signed by Henry W. Rice, chairman of committee on ordinances, in re- gard to the Chamber of Commerce requesting a ecity ordinance prohibit- ing iJjewelry auctions after 6 o'clock in the evening. This is quite true. We believe that every individual who $urrh¢soq jew- elry should have an opportunity to closely scrutinize the article and de- liberate upon its purchase. We do not object to the sale of jewelry at| night, but to the practice of auction- ing it-after 6 o'clock. a known fact that auctioneera, who are requlred ‘Christmas —and after all, what other cigarette is so highly respected by so many men? by law to pay the “large” license fee of $2.00 per month for the privilege | of doing business, open jewelry stores | for short periods only. At any of these auctions how many | Jf the bidders ever get more than a “passing glance' of the article upon | which he is bidding, and which the auctioneer so deftly waves before his {eyes? How many people hate to be | over bid during the excitement and ! enthusiasm which attends these af- Tairs? After he has given a few weeks of wear to the article which hag been | so purchased, usually at a highePF price | | than it could be obhtained at other more reputable dealers, and he finds that the “finish” is beginning to wear off, then it begins to dawn upon him | that he has been “stuck” and he re- | turns to the place where the purchase was made, only to find the store clos- {¢d and the auctioneer gone to points iunknown; would he not feel as though this sort of business was a ‘menace” to the public? But that is not all. What about the {jeweler who has laid in a consider- able stock and rents his store year after 'year, and pays taxes into the| city ‘treasury? Is he not entitled to “protection” from this sort of ‘‘com- | petition?" “ Therefore, we take exception to the paragraph which appeared in said communication, which reads as fal- 1os: urthermore it might be added h truth that the merchant against Hartford’ INew Br whom this proposed legislation fs aimed, has been in business in the city for a number of years and pays on something like $70,006 into the city ireasury in the form of taxes." We wish to emphatically and vig- crously deny that there is “any truth” in the statement that this movement | is aimed at any merchant or group of merchants in the City of New Britain. Such an ordinance has been discussed at various Chamber of Commerce meetings for the past three years; but o definite action was considered un- il recently. On the contrary we feel that such an ordinance would be a big henefit to the resident jewelers of New 3ritain. An ordinance now exists in New Haven, Hartford and Waterbury, which is substantially as follows: “No person, firm or corporation shall sell or dispose of at public auc- tion within the city of: , after 6 c'clock in the afternoon, watches, diamonds, jewelry, sterling silverware, plated ware, clocks, or any other goods pertaining to the jewelry busi- ness. Any person violating any of the provisions of this sectiop shall torfeit and pay a penalty of fifty dol- lars for each and every offense.” We believe that our common coun- cil will see the justice of such an or- dinance, as have the councils of New Haven, Hartford and Waterbury. Tlespectfully submitted, *RAY L. Shake the. grate to remove ashes and lower the fuel bed but stop when the first live coals appear. . Spread a thin layer of anthra- cite over the entire grate and al- low a few minutes for this fuel to Ignite, Next fill the fire pot with coke, and allow this to burn until blue flame appears, then add another layer of anthracite, After firing and seeing that the charge is ignited, check off the draft to the desired point for slow burning, When banking the fire for the night, use less coke and more an- thracite, but otherwise fire in the same manner, Anthracite pea or buckwheat can often be used alone with suc- cess, This will happen when the draft is unusually good and the furnace is amply large. Small size anthracite ignites slowly. Tt is best to fire one-half of the™ grate at a time, allowing the first half of the charge to ignite be- fore adding the second half, Smail sizes may be used in the fall and spring if not in the winter, Rules for Burning Wood and Anthracite Pea or Buckweat Follow the rules for coke and anthracite, substituting block wood for coke. It is highly im- portant to see that the fuel is properly ignited and giving off flame ' before closing off the Parents of Rory 0O'Connor, Executed By TFree State, Want No Bloodshed in Ireland.
