HOLMES OUTLIES NEEDS OF SCHOOLS Tells Rotary Club Budget Will Go Over $,1350,000 Four of the immediate needs of the New Britain schools were outlined by Stanley H. Holmes, superintendent of schools, at the regular meeting of the New Britaln Rotary club held at the EIk' club on Washington street this noon at 12:16 o'clock, The first need is that of more room, Mr. Holmes said, inasmuch as there are 1040 children in the city on a part. time schédule at present which means that there are 520 more chil- dren in school than the schools were built’ to accommodate, The second need is for a better provision of more defiite attendance work in the schools. The superintendent explain- ed that a larger staff of people should be employed, not only in New Britain but in other cities, to keep the chil- dren in school, to take care of tru- ancy cases and such work, The third nced in the city is for more help in the administration and business offices. At present, the speaker said one superintendent and three clerks are employed to take care of the extensive school problem here, ta look after the teachers : and all other help and to take care of all fol- low-up work. More help is needed in this department, Mr. Holmes asserted. The fourth need is for the public and the children to have a more whole- some respect for the schools. To this end, Mr., Holmes said, the parents should see to it that they take an in- terest in the schools whether or not they have children in attendance. Superintendent Holmes said that New Britain people are often quoted as saylng that “we have a very fine | school aystem in our town.” “Perhaps this is so,”” the speaker sald, “but it isn't good enough and it never will be until the people take an active interest in it financially and otherwise.” Y Public Lacks Interest opos to American Education week Mr. Holmes said that there is an evident lack of interest in the schools and school problems and that the average person takes it for grant- ed that the schools will run anyway whether he takes an interest in them or not. This attitude, the speaker said is unfortunate for the schools, for the children and even for the people thentselves. Mr. Holmes urged the members of the New Britgin Rotary club to, in turn; urge their friends and the peo- ple of this city to visit the schools, te arouse their interest in the schools and have respect for them. $1,250,000 School Budget Qyer $1,250,000 is to be expended this “next year for the schools, Mr. $800,000 will be for the general run. ning expensés and the rest for the bullding program, Approxi ly 87 needy families in New Britaln will be provided with Christmas dinners this year by as many members' of the New Britain Rotary club as a resuit of a vote tak- en at.the luncheon this noon. The Rotarlans will purchase the dinners, place them in baskets and deliver them td thosg in need. Kurther par. ticulars will be discussed at the meet- ing next week, Leon A, Sprague announced that $475 was realized by the Rotary club from the concert rendered by the Paulist cholr. This money will be used to aid crippled children in New Britain, George W. Dyson was appointed as the chairman of the committee to arrange for the St. Louls convention next spring. The entertainment at the luncheon this noon was provided by wllllnm zlogler EIGHTEEN AWARDED H.
