MODERN YOUNG MAN STILL BUYS GANDY But He Gets It in Small Pockeet- Size Packages To some, people, candy is candy. | But candy is not always candy to| everyone, according to a local con- fectioner. There are various styles and kinds of candy and ways of hand- ling it and habits and customs in mand and supply and thus keep abreast of the trade. Years ago when the writer, and some of the readers were younger, the young man intending to call on his sweetheart on a Saturday evening, put| on his “Sunday suit,” shined his best pair of shoes, got the Sunday hat | out of the trunk and proceeded toj the corner drug store where he pur- chased the largest, most gaudily dec- | orated, and fanciest box of candy ht could find, within his financial means. Then he went to the home of . the young woman in question and spent the evening in the parlor, departing for home about 10 o’clock. I don’t want to be seen carrying the blamed thing down the street”” Thus he gets a small pack- age, plain white or wrapped in white paper and carefully concealed from sight. He strolls to' the booth on the corner, calls up Mae or Mabel, or Margaret, and says, “Hello Peaches, let's go to the movies.” When he gets to Mabel's home she meets him at the front door and the hox of candy is opened at the theater. “No, I don't think prohibition has much to do with it,” said a Jocal candy dealer. I don't think it creates an appetite for candy when a man's drink is stopped. Before prohibition a man would’get ‘lit up’ on a Satur- day night and he.would buy a box of candy on the way home to make peace with his wife. Now he doesn’t have to fix it up, he goes home ‘sober and without the candy.” | Regular Sales. | very much, despite the popular feel- ing to the contrary. A candy dealer| who" gells several hundred dollars' worth a weecks, says it seldom varies more than two or three dollars. A large portion of the package can- dy sale is on Saturday to families who take it home for over Sunday, he said.
