MARHED GHANGE IN GERMAN LIFE TODAY Otticers of Army Forced to Begin Lile Anew Berlin, June 9. — Fighting for a post-war existence in civilian life has proved more harrassing than the for- tunes of the battlefield to many of the thousands of German officers who survived the war. They numbered some 300,000 at the time of the armis- tice. While the majority held only war-time commissions, there were a large number of vetérans for whom the lifting smoke of the conflict re- vealed that they had suddenly been uprooted from their chosen careers and were forced to begin afresh in new flelds. }t was especially difficult for the aged officers, who were no lenger vigorous and adaptable enough to battle effectively in an economic maelstrom already burdened with keen competition. The German army and navy in peace time included’ an active of- ficers' corps of 55,760, of whom 50,- 960 were in the military forces. When the war broke out, this list was aug- mented by 270,000 of those who were retired or on reserve. In addition there was the commissioned staff of the medical franches numbering 33,- 406. The total loss in the corps amounted to about 55,000 killed and 96;214 wounded. Officers Must Work. Bince the Treaty of Versailles per- mitted the retertion of but 4,000 of- ficers in the Reichswehr, a vast ma- jority of the war survivors because factors for absorption in civilian pur- suits. Today they are to be found in nearly every walk of life, some hav- ing even resorted to the positions of waiter and porter in order to gain a Hvelihood. Some were connected with trade, labor, or industry— through family ties and thus found situations comparatively easily. Oth- ers returned to official positions, and a part enlisted in the newly-organized Security Police A considerable section of thé ex- officers turned to umiversity callings; particularly could they be seen at ju- dicial and medical lectures and in polytechnic schools. In the first per- fod of transition, some worked in gub- ordinate executive positions as assist- ants and some at manual labor, even as miners. There are none of the larger bank- ing and industrial concerns today in which former officers are not active In some banks one runs across an oc- casional general. Former staff officers were in position to receive tempting industrial offers because of their un- usual preparation and their knowledge of languages. Already before the war, ofticers were in demand in the fnsur- ance field as inspectors and agents, and this number has been noticeably increased. The automobile industry, too, has attracted many. Detective agencies and warehouses have em- ployed them in divers capacities. In short, the huge network of Ger- many's trade, commerce, and indus- try is fairly dotted with these former heads of companies,: battalions = and other units in the old war-time armies. They are in thé mines, metal works, machine factories, electrical plants, technical offices, quarries and export houses; some have drifted to the film industry. The former surgeon-major in the army have condescended to be mere medical men or have become special- {sts in their profession. Many went into the chemical industry or took places in hospitals. Officers blinded in the war were mostly instructed at the School for Blind at Marburg, where they studied political economy and simultaneously learned typewrit- ing and stenography. Begin New Life. Certain of the officers who, after the close of the war, resolved to be- gin life anew as settlers in some for- eign land, are reported to have really unhappy experiences. Some died miserably after sore privation; while some few others succeeded in getting back to the Fatherland. Only a small minority made real progress abroad. Very few left the country, however, it is said, and the charge that German ex-officers since the war have joined foreign armies and navies is regarded here as unfounded. The marked transformation in mode ot living has variously affected the family life of ex-officers, not all of whom can maintain their former so- clal status. For example, there is the case of the well known First Lieuten- ant Berg, who in the world war was the commander of the "Appam,” tak- en as a prize ship by the “Moewe."” He obtained a situation in Hamburg, leaving his wife and children in the Danish town of Apenrade, formerly Three U-boat officers combined and .bought a small salling cutter, which they ply as a freighter between Ger- man and Scandinavian ports, They themselves comprise the crew, loading and discharging all cargoes personal- ly. LEONA DARE, ONCE ' ACROBAT, IS DEAD Was Noted For Her Daring Exploits on Trapeze Hanging From Balloon in Air Spokane, Wash,, June 9. — Mrs. Leona Dare, who risked her life many times ip making balloon ascensions in various parts of the world, died here recently at the age of 67, after an ill- ness of four months. Mrs. Dare entered her dangerous profession as a girl. She possessed a scrapbook containing clippings in many languages telling of her ex- ploits. &he once drifted over London, England, hanging by her teeth from a pendant on the trapeze, is is sajd +In the seventies and eighties Leona Dare's beauty and daring won her a wide reputation. She appeared with:| circuses in this country, at the Folies Bergere in Paris, and made several balloon ascensions, performing on a trapeze as she went aloft. Perhaps her most noted dizplay was her ascen- gion to 5,000 feet above the great crowd at the Crystal Palace in Lon- don. She married a man named Hall in this city in 1871, She divorced him and later she married FErneshb T Grunebaum of Vienna. who proposed to her following a serious accident that prevented her performing for a long time Leona Dare was the dauchter of Annie Meiza, called “The Child of the Alamo,” because her mother had been killed by a stray bullet during the massacre. Leona's real name was Leona Adelaide Stuart, her mother having married Andrew J. Stuart of Atlanta, a Confederate general. The child lost track of her mother after the confusion following Sherman's march to the sea, and for many years she carried on a vain search for her- After her retirement she lived at Oak- wood, 8.
