MYSTERIOUS THEFT AT BANK SOLVED Three Are Arrested For Robbery of §500.000 in Bonds at Chase National Bank. New York, May 11.—The myster- ious theft of, $500,000 in Liherty bonds from the Chase National bank was solved yesterday. Four hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars of the bonds were recovered and three per- sons were arrested The principal in the theft, accord- ing to detectives and Pinkerton opera- tives, was a watchman in the registry department of the bank, an ex-cow- puncher and Texas ranger who was trusted implicity. This man, Arthur I. Chase, was arrested late last eve- ning at the bank. The police say he confessed. The others arrested were John V. Vardeman, 30 years old, a former em- ploye of the bank, wife, an opera singer known as Ferne Hollis. 1'nraveling of the plot which resulted in the theft of the half mil- lion in negotiable securities showed that Chase, Vardeman and Mrs. Var- deman alone were responsible.
