ACCOMPLISHMENTS During three Seasons, 2,800 “Home Gardens” were cultivated. 12,000 bushels of potatocs alone were produced in one season. Thesc home gardens had a total valuation each year of approximately $47,000. . Extension of the North End Trolley Line from Allen Street to Francis Street. ; Assisted in the Organization of Hardware Building and Loan Corporation with capitalization of $1,000,000. Petition to City for funds to install modern street lighting granted and “White Way Lighting System” Installed. Organized the “Day Nursery” which in one year alone cared for more than 10,000 children. Organized the “United Community Corporation,” combining eight small campaigns into one each year. Secured shelter at Berlin Station for New Britain Passengers taking south bound trains. Also secured protection for in-bound and out- bound freight at our local Freight House. Secured facilities for loading and unloading eight trucks instead of one at the Connec- ticut Freight House. Secured enlargement of territory covered by the American Express. Secured favorable action on “Home Rule Bill.” Bill for additional facilities for State Hospital for Feeble Minded. Strenuously opposed increase in auto truck license fees in excess of 100 per cent. Effort made to strengthen bridges in Connecticrt to eight ton capacity. Our preparations for the “Railroad Strike” were used as an example for other cities in the State. Asa result of recommendations the work of the Tuberculosis Relief Society was taken over by the Health Departm~ Secured favorable legislation on “Itinerant Vendors Law.” Secured Daylight Savings. Organized “Americanization” and “Junior Achievement.” Conducted July 4th Celebrations, Welcome Home Week, Clean-Up Campaigns, Safety First Week, Outings, Etc. Raised by popular subscription, funds for Municipal Christmas Tree yearly. Actively engaged in and co-operated with all Liberty Loan, Red Cross, and United Community Corporation Drives. Introduced “Chautauqua” to New Britain, which met with such enthusiasm that it has been underwriiten to return in 1922. Secured two New Industries for the city. PRESENT ACTIVITIES A study is being made of present Voting Places with a view of recommending more desirable locaticns and facilities, either through the use of School Buildings or Portable Voting Booths. : . Strenuous effort is being made to secure an appropriation from the State for the construction of Better Highways leading out of New Britain. Prosecuting to the fullest extent violators of the “Itinerant Vendors Law.” i Bringing representatives of the largest Railroads and Steamship Companies before the members of our Traffic Bureau, acquainting them with facts as to where New Britain actually stands in the manufacturing world, and keeping the members informed up to the minute with changes, rules and regulations. The Chamber of Commerce rooms and service are utilized regularly by twenty or more organizations in the city. The rooms are open and free to all organizations of a public nature, whose objects and purposes are for Community Betterment. State and National referenda come to the Chamber continuously for expressions of op'nion on many matters affecting the interests of all. The Board of Directors meet regularly every Monday,and give freely of their time, effort and service for the betterment of New Britain. Last year's total output of mail was 19,259 pieces, with a total expenditure of over $300 for postage alone. We have daily mail in- quiries for authentic information from many sourcez. In addition to this, receiving on an average of 50 telephene calls daily for information of every description.
