Second Section J e INEW BRITAIN HERALD N. & J. MOCK TRIAL COMPLETE SUCCESS “Anchor Brand” Club's Version Of Court Procedure Furnishes Amusement Comedy was unshackled at a mock trial held last night by the ‘“Anchor Iirand” club of North & Judd Manu- facturing company, when Thomas J. Devine was accused of the theft of an automobile from William Young. After more than three hours' taking of testimony, the intelligent jury re- ported a verdict of first degree mur- der, whereupon Judge Martin H. Kenney expressed astonishment at the absurdity of such a finding and sent the jury back for further cogitation. A few minutes later the jury—or that part of it represented by the fore- man, Andrew Colehan—brought in a verdict of not guilty, although it was later learned that the twelve good and true men had reached a decision op- posite to that reported by the fore- man. The roles for the trial were taken by the following: For the prosecution: State's Attor- ney, I°. M. Holmes his assistant, Samuel McCutcheon; witnesses, A. C. IMaiona onter. a8 police; George H. hine age owner; James police court prosecutor; Jose rel, state police officer; A, 12 finger print expert and clerk of police court; Walter Troop, auto dealer, Ior the defense: Chief counsel, James O'Donnell; his assistant, V. J. O'Hayer; witne: Michael T ¥y bank president; Thomas 1. Salmon, secretary of the Chamber of Com- merce; James P. McAvay, hotel pro- prietor; John 17 Kiley, authority on germs; H. K. Hill, an eminent spe- clalist on' multiple personalities: Al- Lert Howe, chauffeur. 1. J. Ward was clerk of court, and Bob Tryon was court officer. The mock trial brought out the largest attendance in the history of the club. Thomas J. Devine, in a statement to the press, following the reading of I"oreman Colehan’s verdict, insisted that subsequent disclosu id not in any way alter the verdict, The ac- cused asserts that the defense offered by his counsel, James k. O'Dounel, completely shattered the state's cvi- dence, leaving no course but acquittal open.
