Newberry retains his seat senate. By a vote of 46 to 41 the senate at 6:20 o'clock last night adopted a resc- lution declaring the Michigan senator entitled to his seat, but expressing gisapproval of the large amounts épent to obtain his election as being “contrary to public policy, harmful to the honor and dignity of the senate and dangerous to the perpetuity of free government.”” This last declara- tion, which the anti-Newberry sena- tors said was offered as a sop to the republicans who were still on the fence, was offered by Senator Willis, who had a conference yesterday with President Harding, when the New- ' berry case was discussed, it is said. The affirmative vote was entirely republican, while nine members of the majority (Borah, Capper, Jones of Washington, Kenyon, Ladd, La- Toilette, Norbeck, Norris and Suther- land) voted with 32 democrats against the resolution. All the so-called “doubtful” repub- licans, {including George Wharton Pepper, the new senator from Penn- sylvania, finally voted for the resolu- tion to seat Newberry. But it was not until an hour of the final vote that it was certain how all of them would go. ‘Willis himself, Poindex- ter and Pepper were the last to de- cige. After the result was announced Mr. Newberry made the following state- ment: “My heart is fllled with thankful- ness that the three years and four months of persecution have ended in complete vindication and exoneration of myself and all concerned.” Y. . In accord with its long established custom of promoting a better public understanding of the telephone busi- ness, The Southern New England Tel- ephone company, through its em,- ploves, is issuing invitations to sub- scribers to visit its operating rooms and, in the larger cittes, other inter- esting parts of the telephone build- ings. Anyone with an interest in the tre- mendous task of providing telephone gervice to 180,000 stations in Connec- ticut, from which more than 800,000,- 000 calls were handled in the past vear, is welcomed to the telephone building and, accompanied by experi- enced telephone people, will be shown through this intensely interesting pub- lic service plant. Employes of the company now have invitation cards which they are au- thorized to issue to public introduc- ing the holders to the exchange man- ager. Upon presentation of one of these cards at the manager's office during business hours, the visitor is taken for a thorough inspection of the telephone property and the wonders of telephony are explained. The operating room is of most in- terest to nearly all the visitors. A glance at the soldierly line of active and conscientious workers will do more than anything else can to dispel the absurd thought that they spend their time discussing fashions, reading novels and chewing gum. Happlily, with a better public understanding of the telephone business, and particu- larly of the operators’ highly impor- tant part in it, few persons hold the old-fashioned notion about telephone operators, The sight of a modern telephone switchboard is a revelation to those who have not seen one and the rapid- ity with which telephone connections are set up by the young ladles is a splendid example of co-cperative ef- fort. No less interesting is the oper- ating work on the big toll boards through which more than 10,000,000 calls were handled in Connecticut last year. In the larger cities the commodious and home-like rest rooms, the com- pany restaurants and the other parts of the plant which have to do with the mechanics of maintaining tele- phone service, will be visited. On the whole a trip through the teiephone plant is well worth while as instruc- tive on the way in which this de- * SCHOOL PLANS PROGRESS New Plant to Be Erected In_Stanley o Y Quarter by State Board Will *:Bg Started in Early Spring.
