l Second Section EBERT’S NEW ORDER MEETS OPPOSITION l!onarclnsts Believe * Should Wear Uniforms Berlin, Oct. 7.—President Ebert's order forbidding former army officers to appear in public in their old wni- forms, except when attending the fun- eral of a comrade, has brought a protest from the monarchists who de- clare there are many officers who are too impoverished to by clothes and that therefore the President’s de- cree means virtual imprisonment for them. ‘The order was iséued to curb monarchistic agitation, in which of- ficers parading in resplendent uni- forms have been playing a conspicu- ous role and strikes particularly at Prince Eitel Friedrich, General Luden- dorff and Field Marshal von Hinden- burg, who seldom appear in public except in full army regalia. The order applies to ex-soldiers as ‘well as officers but the' former are permitted to wear their uniforms if buttons and insignia of the Kaiser’s regime are removed. The monarchists recently have been agitating against the republic through the medium of soldiers’ organizations such as “The Front Fighters,” ‘“The Steel Helmet,” and “The National As- sociation of Soldiers.” The meVements received the en- thusiastic support of a number of newspapers, which became so out- spoken that the government sup- pressed them and issued a warning that further agitation would not be tolerated. Labor organizations haye assumed a united front against the associations of officers and soldiers/who are seek- ing to re-establish a monarchy' and, Rothfeder’s 378 Main Street Officers ) in the campaign of propaganda Which has followed, serious threats and charges and counter-charges have been made. The Socialists and Communists and in fact all the ultra-radicals, have en- listed in support of labor “to save the republic.” While they are not unanimous in supporting the present | government, they are of one mind} in the belief that the monarchists must be completely eradicated. One Of the chief arguments of the labor organizations in their agitation against the insistent propaganda of the monrchists is that a return to the old regime would mean the loss of the eight hour day which has been the workman’s principal benefit of the war and the revolution. The monarchists are meeting his argument with the assertion that un- der a monarchy the cost of living would be reduced at least by half, and it is known that a certain percentage of the working population, hard hit by low wages and high prices is listen- ing attentively to this appeal, remem- bering pre-war conditions, when there was plenty of food for all at’prices which the poorest paid wage earner eould pay. The controversy beween these two factions has resulted in another “class war,” in which both sides have been preaching the doctrine of hate, appac- ently with an unalterable antagonism to compromise. Many speakers on both sides have advocated resort to any sort of weapon and recent political mur- ders have so'intensified the hatred that there are observers who believe civil war is not inprobable. CITY GETS BIG FUND. Manchester, Eng. Oct. 7. — A pa- geant parado brought in $25,000 for the benefit of Mezieres, France, which has been adopted by Manchester. The rebuilt French city is dedicating a street to Manchester in return. The regalia of England, a collec- tion of crown jewels, is said to be ‘worth $15,000,000.
