Artists of dance have de- fended and condemned it, the public taking which side they liked. Most of them decided, however, that there was nothing wrong about it if inter- nreted correctly. It is just like any tHer >~ gésthetlc “pleasure—take it in its legitimate sense and it is above rar, but confide its secrets to the pol- luted and degrading set and it is banned for all who follow the cours> of a happy medium. The Chicago is danced in many cities now and is really quite easy. The fox-trot music peals forth its emotion gripping tones, the dancers start with a regular fox- trot step and after a moment or two tiiley start “Chicagoing.” That is they stand and the male partner puts his right foot away out to the side, then pulls it back one step nearer, the girl using her opposite foot, ani ine third step is a drag to the right with a dip at the end. This contin- ues three or four times or as long as the movements of the dance crowd do rot interfere with the steps. All very simple, n'est ce pas? The College Rock. The so called College Rock is really the simplest thing going. ,The couple nd on the floor, the male swings right foot forward, the girl her left foot back, then the two feet are placed in the opposite position This is done with a swinging move- ment whch resembles the old fash. ioned rocking horse. The swing is continued three or four steps; then a skip is taken by the couple and the l same poeration is performed with the other foot. Between the swing of the right and left foot there is, there- fore, one beat which is ufed as a tie- cver to retain balance and get th: proper swing. The far-famed toddle and shimmy have virtually left the home of dance. The stage no longer boasts its shimmy artists who rival an animal bothered Ty fleas in the hot weather, hor does, the dance'hall boagts ifs toddler; who. nade a shoe stors,,with persons try- ing on their new shoes and jumping up and down on their toes to see if they fit, look like -a morgue. . The shimmy and toddle have few adnvrers left now, after enjoying a very Pros- perous past season. Old admirers of dancing have very good authority when they say that the new dances require no skill or art bufi are simply a form of walking aroun the dance hall. ' The appearances o some of the dancers on the floor would indicate that .that is fnost certainly true. Gone are the catchy rotes of the polka, the round-glide, and others of past years when it really required some art and. skill up- on the part of the dancers to ihter- |} pret the dance in reality. ‘Some would say that the dances of today. leaving ou$ the toddle and shimmy, are simply' a form of walking exer- cise where the girl walks batkward, the boy forward, then a turn, and so on until time for applause, when the same thing is continued until the roll on the drum -announces pumber finished. The Chicago and Cellege Rock will vary this somewhat | § and add to the repertoire'of the in- ierpreters. of terpsichore. ; Tha College Boyi College boys are not generally cred- ited with any great desires for re- forms or changes which would malke them rank with the more eiite, but, nevertheless, there has been noticed a tendeney on their part to get away trom the courser forms of the dance and get something which they would not.object to dancing under the wary eyes of mother or father or even some well versed chaperdns. And so it is learned that the college boy, no, nbt only in New Britain. but mn general, are the ones who are leading the way back to the old time, or Ulysses S. Grant, period of ball-room behaviour. This statement is in accord with some made by dancing masters from all over the %ountry who are holding their annual convention this week at the Hotel Astor in New York. Men and women from Newark, New Or- leans, MooserJaw and Manhattan, Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Poul, Waterbury and other way stations, have acreed that it was because un- dergrads, home for holidays, are in favor of a little more dignity and decorum in their dances that the teachers have decided to support this reform movement. The Dignity Trot. The dance that seems to have met with approval at the convention, ac- cording to experts, i3 the walk- around fox-trot, introduced by Mrs. Edna R. Passapae of Newark. Mrs. Helan R. Sweney of Boston fame and a recosgnized authority on dan has introduced a fox-trot of the sine type which she calls the culture trot. The name walk-around describes the néw dance perfectly. It's a stroll with a lot of dignity and a refined turn at intervals, It is danced in the position for partners that all grand- mothers heartily approved and who knew nothing pf the free, “catch-as- catch-can' holds that came in with the advent of jazz.
