CHINESE BUILD BlG RALLROAD PROJECT Great Engineering Feat Is Finally Accomplished Péking, July 15.—The, Peking Suiyuan railway, financed and built by Chinese, has just been completed. It is regarded as a triumph of Chi- rese engineering skill as applied to railroa@ building. It extends from the capital, 403 miles through a rich tut undeveloped section, and its con- struction presented many difficult en- ¥ineering problems, and passing as it does through various administrative areas in two provinces, many political obstacles had to be overcome as well. Projected extension and branch Wnes will afford communication with the Yéllow River district on one Land Q.Bd with the Trans-Siberian . system on the other, and will open up, when completed the great hinter- Jand of Kansu and Mongolio. Work on the railway was begun in 1905 when Yuan Ehih-Kai was serving as director general of rail- ways, and the first section from Pe. | king to Kalgan was opened for traffic in 1910. After theat construction was suspended on account of the revolu- ion until 1912, and a further inter- ption of five years occurred dur- irng the European war. Yeh Kung-cho, the recently retired rainister of communications finished the work last winter. When linked up with the Trans-Siberian and with 'he proposed Peking-Canton line, it will afford the longest continuous all- rail communication in the world. APPROVES ONE-PIECE SUIT. ‘Sensible’ for Women Bathers, Mayor Pcters of Boston. Boston, Says July 15.—Mayor Peters has expressed the opinion that the one-piece bathing suit is proper for a young woman. He is an expert swim- mer. “I think the one-piece bathing suit is a sensible and comfortable thing for a woman to wear,” he said. “I don’t see how they can swim at all in those clumsy suits.” The mayor was visiting the girl's bathing beach at City Point where he saw hundreds of girls, practically all of them clad in heavy skirted suits. Many of them - were struggling through first lessons in swimming. “I wish the officials would take more care in passing out suits that fit,” he commented. At the Savin Hill bathing beach, Dorchester, the mayor and Wilbert E. Longfellow, president ot the National Life Saving Corps of the American Red Cross, gave an exhibition in life saving. As the mayor is extremely bald, and ‘“‘grabbing the hair” was an important part of the rescue act, h2 was the rescuer.
