Those who know the man feel sure that his present mental condition was caused by worry over his failure to veceive the check. Poor health, lack of work, mount- ng expenses and no wheer withal to meet the bills added to his apparent- ly fruitless efforts to obtain govern- ment money, made him despondent. It is not known whether the relief to his mind by the receipt of the check will have a tendency to restore} him to normal condition c- not. While this is one of the few cases in which there has been delay of a very serious nature, it is one of hun- dreds which is being handled contin- | ually by the local bureau. Two months in the record for the shortest time in cleaning up a case. The bureau handles money from the state fund s well as from the government. Ap- proximately $200 a month is distri- buted for food, clothing and rent to 2x-service men. As is the case in all instances dur- ing the present depression, married en are given preference in be- ing provided with work and aid. These men, many of them owing rent for months as well as large bills for groceries and clothing, feel the need of aid more acutely than single 'men who have no one to look out for but themselves. . However, no one is turned down. All worthy cases are investigated and acted upon according to their mrits. It is said that the circumstances of some single men have become so sefioys that many are without homes, beingyforced to sleep on porches, verandas or n clubs, living upon the charity of friends wherever possible. A statement by Commander Jackson »f Eddy-Glover Post has been made to the effect that if conditions do not improve by fall, he will recommend putting army cots in the legion hall to accommodate those who have no place to sleep. Gas and shell shock have resulted in placing men in institutions about the state, they having been rendered unfit for any kind of work. The local service bureau is helping to maintain these men. A number of local entertainers, most ly from the local Legion post, will visit the Allentown hospital at West Haven tomorrow and provide an en- tertainment for the patients. Com- mandergJackson and Councilman H. A.#¥infPrell are the prime movers on the ’l"" ram. IU?Y HXEARS BUT ONE SIDE. Convicts of Murder Louisville Man Who Refuses to Offer Defense. Louisville, July 7.—A verdict call- ing for the death penalty has been returned by a jury in the case of Wal- ter P. Stamp, charged with the mur- der of J. Smith Russell. A precedent in court records of the state was said to have been es- tablished when counsel for Stamp re- fused to take part in the trial. The jury heard only state evidence, the defense refusing to produce witness- es. This attitude followed failure by counsel for Stamp to obtain a change of venue and a continuance. He con- tended that Stamp could not obtain a fair trial here. During the testimony defense counsel and Stamp read newspapers, apparently showing little interest in the proceedings. A new trial, it is announced, will be sought, denial of which will re- sult in an appeal to'the state court of appeals. Stamp, it was charged, shot and killed Russell on the night of June 1 while the latter was driving his automobile. Mrs. Russell was wound- ed, and a baby daughter was shot at three times but was not hit. Stamp, who denied the shooting, had prev ously accused Russell of causing a separation from his wife. FORDNEY OPTIMISTIC. Fecls House Will Act On Bonus at This Session. . Washington, July 8.—Despite Sec- ret-ry Mellon’s statement of yester- day opposing enactment of a bonus bill, Chairman Fordney of the house ways and means committee said he intended to press for action on his measure to compensate former serv- ice men as soon as tariff and tax leg- islation was completed. “I have no doubt,” Mr. Fordney as- serted, “that some such legislation will be put through at this session ot congress.’" LESS FREIGHT SHIPPED.
