OIL MEN ARE 10 BE EXPOSED Mexican Officials to Unmask Their Actions Mexico City, July 8.—Plutaro E Calles, secretary of the interior, told Mexican newspapermen informally Wednesday night that the: Mexican government was ‘‘prepared to un- mask American oil producers,” whom he charged with “scandalous actions, rot only against the Mexican treas- ury but against the United States as well.” This statement was published in three Mexico City newspapers yes- terday and there was much specula- tion as to the meaning of the secre- tary’s statement. Alhough the wording of the decla- 1ation of Senor Calles varied in yes- terday’s newspapers, each printed in- interview attributed to the secretary the same sentiments. - He was said to have referred to alleged attempts by American oil companies to Codge in- come taxes by dissolving *he parent corporations and forming numerous subsidiaries. Continuing, the secre- tary said, according to rhe version printed by El Universal: “Knowing the other systems used by the oil companies to hide the true status of their enterprise, the Mexi- can government in defense of its own inerests has by means of agents in the United States started an active campaign to pull the masks from the faces of these companies.” Secretary Calles is said to have re- terred to the complaints of oil com- panies against article 27 of the Mexi- $5.0( "E———— 5 ()0 L] Are You Being Fooled All Developing and Printing done by us has our name on the envelope, whether you get it direct or through an agency. S., China and Japan on East Question. London, July 8 (By Associated Press)—Great Britain, it was stated here today, in a quarter usually possessed of reliable information, is believed to have made overtures to the United States, Japan and China on the possibility of -a conference to discuss the .whole Eastern situation If this is correct it is pointed out, it might explain what Premier Lloyd George meant yesterday when he stated in the house of commons that he was awaiting replies from America and -China before making a statement to the public concerning the Anglo- Japanese treaty. Official circles declined to comment on the nature of any communications with the United States, China or Japan but it was said in.those circles it would be reasonable to assume that these countries would be fully sounded before Great Britain Wohld show her hand. Announcement of the British policy is expected to be forthcoming next Monday in the statement which Mr. Lloyd George said he was fairly hope- ful of being in a position to make. This statement is id to be “a very comprehensive one HE LEAPS BEFORE TRAIN. Fourth Attempt of Baltimore Man to Die Succeeds. Baltimore, July $.—Having unsuccessful in three attempts at suicide, William Spencer, 6, jumped in front of an express train of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad last night in Rosedale and was instantly killed. When police visited the man’s room here they found a letter addressed to Mrs. J. B. Williams, Bellwood Park, N. J, in which he wrote as follows: “Dear Sister—My time is close at hand. I see it. Forgive me for what I am about to do.” Spencer was arrested last Saturday after he had .been rescued from the harbor at the foot of Boston street. He then attempted to end his life by inhaling gas but was discovered in time to save his life.
