Tony Burr, of 31 Lilac street, sus- tained a slight injury in the thigh yesterday morning when a cannon ex- ploded nearby. Tony took some of the slugs to the police station but the authorities there could find no evi- dence to show that it was anything but an accident. No action was taken. Blank Cartridge Cases The majority of accidents during the day consisted of blank cartridge burns. A Marholin boy, aged probably seven or eight years, of Hartford avenue, was shot in the right hand. The wound was dressed by Dr. M. Volkenheim. Tony Satalino, a 6-year-old boy of East and Woodland streets, was shot in the hand by a blank cartridge. Dr. A. L. Avitable dressed the injury. Two boys, Clarence Derrick of Black Rock avenue, and Edgar Hor- tor of Bassett street, who ages ap- parently are about 10 to 12 years, were treated by Dr. John Purney for blank cartridge burns on the hand. Anti-toxin was administered as a pre- cautionary measure. Twelve-year-old Grace Schroeder, of Division street, was shot back of the ear by a boy whose name is un- known, the shot being fired with a blank cartridge pistol. She was pain- fully burned about the neck and face. Dr. C. M. Cooley administered treat- ment. Dr. G. H. Dalton was called upon to treat a powder burn on the left hand of the Weare boy, on Arch street, who was burned with a blank cartridge. The explosion of a blank cartridge in his hand sent Walter Schnell, about 10 years old, to Dr. William Flanagan for treatment. Dr. Flanagan also treated another boy for slight burns caused by a fire cracker exploding in his hand. SMUTS 8 (Continued from First Page.) they missed the general and he mo- tored to Dublin unnoticed. ' London, July 5.—Gen. Jan Chris- tian Smuts, premier of the Union of South Africa, left for Ireland last night and was expected to arrive im Dublin early today. It was under- stood here this morning that the pur- pose of his visit to Ireland was to con- fer with Sinn Fein and Unionist leaa- ers of south Ireland preliminary to the resumption of their conference next Friday. The Unionists and Sinn Feiners held a brief meeting in Dub- lin yesterday, and reports received here indicated that they had reached an understanding as to matters to be discussed at future conferences. The Dublin conference was the out- standing feature in London newspa- pers this morning, mearly all treating it sympathetically and expressing hoe that it would lead to peace in Ireland. Comrfient on the meeting, however, was not devoid of remarks that the conference did not affect the program of the Sinn Fein guerilla warfare on crown forces there. Sir James Craig, premier of Ulster, left Belfast for London today, and it is pointed out he will have abundant time to confer. with members of the government and others whom he may desire to consult, pending a decision by Eamonn de Valera respecting the proposed conference of Irish leaders with Mr. Lloyd George. Earl Middleton, one of the four southern Unionists who took part in yesterday’s conference at Dublin ar- rived in England last night and it is assumed he intends to confer with politicians here during the interval between resumption of the Dublin conference on Friday. Earl Middle- ton when interview at Holyhead, de- clined to talk of the proceedings cF the conference saying the participants mutually had agreed to say nothing for publication at present, adding that,, as far as he, personally, was concerned. he would say there was no reason to be dissatisfied with the progress made.
