ROGERS’ BLOCK IS EXONERATED IN DYING STATEMENT .However, Chicago Woman Ad- mits Shooting Husband Chicago, May 3.—Denying that “other women"—whose existence she froely admitted—had anything to do with the motives that led to the kill- ing early today by Dr, Thomas Row- land, widely known dental specialist, Mrs. Rowland has confessed that she had fired the shot after her husband on his deathbed had exonerated her. “I fired in self-defense " she de- clared. “We had quarrelled and he came toward me. I have always kept a revolver undepy my pillow for pro- tection because I could never rely upon his being home nights, I seized it and fired just as he was about to lay hands on me, Mrs.' Rowland did not know of her hysbarid’s death until the news was taken to heg by Charles E. Erbstein, her attorney. “I didn’t think he would die!” she cried. “I didn't know he was badly hurt.” ‘When she had recovered somewhat she told for the first time details of the shooting. “I was lying in bed reading when my hueband came in,’ she said. “He was late, He was always late. There was a fuarrel a little more bitter than usual and he started toward me— the revolver was under my pillow. I reached for it and fired, just as he was going to lay hands on me. He fell there and I ran into the hallway screaming. 1 never dreamed that he was really seriously hurt. “The ‘other woman’ in his life had flothing to do with our quarrel. This last one was no more than others and there were several others. She was merely an incident. Our quarrel had to do with something entirely dif- ferent—a matter that I cannot dis- cuss, at this time.” Assertion that his wife was not implicated in the shooting was made by Dr. Rowland just before he died, Dr. I. R. Willetts testified. “I asked him if his wife was respon- sible for the shooting and he em- phatically replied that she was not,” he said. ;Woman With Dead Baby Sued For $15 Back Rent New York, May 3.—Bernard Scheinberg,. a landlord, began suit yesterday in the First District Muni- cipal court in Brooklyn against Mrs. Harry Kanbey of 317 Pacific street for overdue rent amounting to $15. The suit was not dismissed even after it was explained in court that Mrs. Kan- bey had no money, that her baby boy had died last Thursday, that his body is now in the morgue and that she was trying desperately to borrow enough money to pay for his funeral. Justice Dunne, however, adjourned the case until next Monday, and told the landlord that if Mrs. Kanbey was not able by that time to pay the amount demanded he would pay it. Several attorneys in the court also offered to help, BENEDIOCTS WILL O. K. THIS. s Einstein Admits Relativity Theory Hits Snag In U. S. Matrimony. Chicago, May %.-—Several weeks spent in the United Statees have con- vinced Prof. Albert Einstein that per- sonal liberty is supreme here, the married man and there the theory of relativity (European) explodes with a bang, in his opinion. - As to his famous theory, he ap- peared a bit dazed at the public In- terest in America. This, however, was his “kindergarten” explanation of the theory. “Two events, occurring neously from the viewpoint of an observer standing still, may not be simultaneous from the viewpoint of a moving observer. ‘Bo, if you ara standing still and see two flashes of lightning you may think they oc- eurred simultaneously. RED SOX DEFENSE AGAINST BABE RUTH Work Ont System Which Scems 1o Cut Down His Terrific Batting Onslanghts. Boston, May 3.—Conceding thati there is no defense against the home run clouting of Babe Ruth, infielders of the Red Sox, nevertheless, think the Yankee outfielder’s hitting can be cut down. To this end they have worked out a defensive scheme of play that proved effective yesterday. The deployment, said to have been conceived by Stuffy McInnmis, puts all tho infielders back on the grass be- yond the diamond. The third base- man plays a bit to the right of his usual position, the shortstop is almost back ol second base and the seconq and first basemen play what is virtual- ly a short right field. The pitcher is assigned to cover first base. In its first test, = vesterday, the scheme showed results as follows: First time up Ruth hit hard to the right of second basé. Pratt's position made possible 2 stop and throw that caught the runner. The next time Ruth struck out. But on his third turn the new defense was tried again. Catching a low curve with a hara swing Ruth smashed the ball toward right field. McInnis from his deep position, swung across to make a sen- sational stop, backhanded, and con-< tinuing his dash beat Ruth by sliding for first base. Finding it impossible to pass the receded infield, Ruth on his fourth time up cracked another low curvae into the right field bleachers for his sixth home run of the season and his only hit ol the game.
