Not all of the men and women who are members of the striking unions, however, were | actually employed when their strikes began, it was explained. In the strike of the building trades, for instance, the union heads said the membership of the ufions tgtalled 65,- 000, while only 25,000 were actually employed when the strike in protest against a 24 per cent. cut in wages an- nounced by the employers was called. Union claims were that 95 per cent. of the 25,000 obeyed the order to quit work. The employers, however, main- tained the combined membership of the unions was only 40,000 and that only 15,000 left work yesterday. They ad- mitted work had ceased on virtually every major building operation in the city. The workmen said they would 1a day and ask him to intercede. Approximately. 800 compositors are out in 65 commercial printing plants, union leaders said. The printers are secking a 44 hour weck instead of 48, and the labor men predicted the press- men would join the composi today. Marine workers maintain 2,700 union members here are affected by the strike of their several unions, and that no ship bill will leave port today. Shipping board and private steamship officials here declared as far as Philadelphia i concerned the strike is relatively unim- portant. Strikes which have long been in progress here include that at the Cramps ship yard where the ‘‘open shop” question has resulted in a num- ber of disturbances. Cramp officials declare the men who quit have been re- placed and no strike exists.
