It is something to be a stage idol at twenty-seven, even in these days with boy wonders. The announcement that the Messrs. Shubert are starring Eddie Cantor, the Bronx singing com- | edian in ‘‘Midnight Rounders,’’ which will be seen at Parsons’ theater, Hart- ford, all next week, reveals the fact that- Cantor has just reached his twen- ty-seventh birthday. Today he commands one of the highest salar- ies in the Shubert organization and yet he rides to and from his home in a street car, roots for the Giants in the bleachers and is the patron of candy stores where gumdrops are a special feature. Eddie Cantor is a veritable Peter Pan. He is almost barred from the Shubert offices because he is continual- Iy playing boyish pranks on some of the har, vo1king office force. K- _.y per- formance is a first night to Cantor. His success has been based on his un- conquerable spirit. If the audience will not warm up he will keep working until they do. He is never tired of encores. The minute one of his songs proves a success he goes afield for another. He haunts Tin Pan Alley and associates with popular song writers. One of his best friends is Irving Berlin. Berlin, oo, is a graduate from the school of hard knocks. He rose from an ivory- pounder in the rear room of a Chinese restaurant to one of the highest-paid @mposers in America. Cantor began singing at school en- tertainments. He had a good voice and a pcculiar knack of supplying un- usual gestures. He was always in de- mand, but he never thought of adopt- ing the stage as a profession. He had planned a medical career. But by word of mouth the news of the Bronx boy's ability reached the Rialto, and finally he went into vaudeville. Zieg- feld gave him his first big chance. He proved one of the biggest drawing eards, with his songs and grotesque black face with white horn-rimmed glasses. He is extremely modest and apparently has no realizationr of the fact that he is one of the most popular singing comedians in America. He is just a boy and wants to remain in that happy and contented state. Seats are now on sale.
