FUND CHANGE | | Needy Ex-Service Men Without | Dependents to Be Cut Chairman Willism W. T. Squire of the state fund committee of the Eddy- Glover post, American Legion, h Pnt in the following letter to the Herald | which is self explanatory: “For the information of the service men in New Britain who have been receiving aid from the state fund | through the Eddy-Glover post, Ameri- can Legion, 1 wish to state that pend- ing action on the part of the state lea- islature granting us an emergency fund it has been necessary to cut the remittances very considerably in order to avoid being absolutely without funds ‘It was decided to cut all single men not bhaving actual dependents for & week or two and to reduce all othos | checks $2.00. 1.t was estimated that the weekly remittances would thereby be cut in half which will allow us to continue for a time until we receive an emergency appropriation from the leg- | islature. | “If the legislature grants the emergency appropriation we have asked for, we will endeavor to resume payments on the old scale, but it will be administered with greater caution than ever because there are men who have been abusing the fund and we are doing all that we can to weed them out. This fund is not a bonus and many men believe they are entitled to it who are neither ill nor needy nor really up against it. **We are trying to play the game fair but the service men in New Britain are not making our jobs pleasant by assuming the attitude that the local committee is to blame when the checks fail to arrive.” STANLEY WORKS IS T0 CHANGE CHARTER| (Continued from First Page.) ex- ing the state highway to supervise construction of ways upon request of towns; versely on bills to include in the highway system roads in New Hav- en and Middlesex counties, Campbell avenue in Orange and certain roads in Madison. Such is Ruling By Corporation Coun- sel—Mayor Denies. Mayor O. F. Curtis mailed a letter this afternoon to President Isadore Simons of the Taxpayers' association in which he denied the petition of that body for another city meeting to act on the tax levy. The mayor explains that the business of the recent meet- ing was acted upon in a legal mat- ter and that perusal of the statutes fail to reveal any means by which another meecting might be called. In his letter, the mayor expresses his regrets at the dissatisfaction arising out of the question but states that he concurs with the decision of the corporation counsel that the meeting is in every way legal.
