C., Dr. Hawkins Is Oldest Bank Director. Raleigh, N. C., Feb. 15.—Dr. A. B. { Hawkins, of this city, who celebrated his 96th birthday on January 25, be- sides having been for years the old- est living graduate of the University of North Carolina, the first state university to be established in Amer- ,ica, is also probably the oldest active { bank director in the United States. | Dr. Hawkins, who is one/ of the ! wealthiest men here, has been a mem- { ber of the board of directors of one | of the largest banks of Raleigh for { more than thirty years, during which time he has missed but few of its meetings, always taking an active in- i‘lerm in the direction of the poli- cies of the institution. He 18 now in splendid physical condition, re- | taining all of his faculties. In ad- dition to his bank duties, Dr. Haw- kins personally looks after his large real estate and other holdings in this state and in Florida. Born in Franklin county on Jan- uary 25, 1825. Dr. Hawkins graduated irrom the University of North Caro- { lina, in 1845, the same year that James K. Polk, an alumnus of this institution, was inaugurated Presi- dent/of the United States. He com- pleted his studies at the Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, Pa., receiving his M. D. degree in 1847, thus making him one of the oldest alumni of this college. He prac- ticed medicine in North Carolina for a number of years after finishing colleze and then moved to Florida, but returned to this state about 40 yvears ago and has since made his home in Raleigh.
