STATUE IS BLESSED Likeness of Joan of Arc, Found In War-Scarred French Village, Now | In Elmhurst Church, New York, Jan. 31.—A statue of St. Joan of Arc, found only slightly scarred in a war ruined French vil- lage, today graces an altar in a church at Elmhurst, N, Y., the first in this country named in honor of the new saint. The relic was discovered in the ruins of the church at Ban de Lave- line by Father Ward G. Mechan, rec- tor of Elmhurst, who was chaplain of an American infantry regiment dur- ing_ the war. Elmhurst's chyrch was named the day of Joap of Arc's canonization, and Father Meehan appointed its rector, and struck by the coincidence, he sent to France for the statue. Tt gan blessed and erected at services held last night. $25,000 FIRE ON NOYES FARM. Tce on Pond Cut to Save Home of Con- necticut Judge. New London, Conn., Jan. 31.—-A spectacular fire late Saturday night de- stroyed the large double barn and other farm buildings on the estate of Judge Walter C. Noyes of the United States circuit court in Old Lyme. For a time it was feared the blaze would spread to Judge Noyes’ summer home, which is one of the finest in Connecticut, but firemen from New London cut through the ice on a pond and obtained enough water to prevent further damage. The loss was placed at $25,000. The live stock killed included five pedigreed cows and a prize bull. Judge Noyes is spending the winter with his family in New York. He ar- rived here today to look over the ruins. Miami, Jan. 31.—When President- elect Harding and his party put away from here yesterday afternoon for the fishing grounds at Cocolobo Camp, thirty miles l\'ay, at least six of the men who will constitute the new cab- inet seemed to have been pretty well decided upon. EMERGENCY TARIFF BILL Reaches Critical Fordney Mecasurce Stage in Its Course in Senate To- day—Final T st Ready. Washington, Jan. 31.—The Ford- ney emergency tariff bill today had reached the critical stage of its course in the senate with republican leaders prpard to bring it to a final test. Under a plar of action adopted Saturday, Chairman Penrose of the finance committee was authorized to’ ask again today for unanimous con- sent on fixing a date for a final vote on the measure. It was understood he would propose February 16. Believing objection almost certain- ly would be forthcoming from demo- cratic opponents, republican leaders had agreed that as the next step Senator Penrose would ' present a petition for cloture. Prospects for the necessary two-thirds vote, how- ever, were admitted to be exceed- ingly slim. Vote on adoption of cloture under the senate rules would come Wednesday. Failing to fix a date for a final vote or to adopt cloture, republicans said they would be compelled to lay aside the tariff measure and tak up the ac- cumulating money bills. This statement was made by Horacio B. 'Varela, a prominent com- mercial lawyer at the second annual banquet of the U. §. Chamber of Commerce. No general measures such as gov- ernment intervention or collective loans could cure the situation, he said, and added that the solution was to be found only in private agree- ments between the interested parties.
