I WANTA PROMOTERS QUIT W. A. Brady and Charles B. Cochran Withdraw From Proposed Demp- scy-Carpentier Bout. New York, Jan. 20.—Withdrawal of two of the promoters of the $500,- 000 championship héavyweight box- ing bout between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier will not deter the third promoter, Tex Rickard from taging the contest, he said today. He ndicated he would immediately pro- ure other promoters to 'take the vlaces of Wm. A. Brady and Charles B. Cochran and attempt to hold the ight in Canada. After a day of denials that the bout had been called off, Brady an- nounced last night that so far as he was concerned he was through be- cause ‘“‘the contracts have not been mutually observed.” He also said he was fully author- ized to announce the formal with- drawal of Cochran, who is in Eng- land. Brady's statemert threw a bomb- shell into the boxing world. Follow- ers of the sport generally agreed that the breaking up of the triumvirate of promoters presaged virtual aban- donment of the plan to hold the con- test in the United States. Rickard was reported to be in favor of stag- ing the fight in Montreal on July 2. Cochran’s reported offer to hold the fight in London was given serious consideration by many enthusiasts. Rickard expressed surprise at the ! action of Brady and Cochran. He regarded their claim that the for- feits had not been posted in accord- ance with the strict letter of the con- tract as a purely technical objection. LIEUT. FARRELL ILL As Result. New York, Horemans, Jan. 20.—Edouard champion billiardist of Europe, announced last night that he Would meet the terms demanded by Willie Hoppe’s manager that a. match between the two might be consu- mated. The difference between the two has been the division of the gate. Hoppe having insisted upon the win- ner taking all while Horemans was held out for a percentage to the loser, but, so anxious is he to bring about the match that he has waived that candition, He said: “I will play Hoppe two matches, one of 2,000 points at 18-1 balkline and one of 3,000 points at 18-2 balkline billiards, and will agree to Hoppe's manager's terms that the winner take all the gate. I want long games that wil afford a real test.” BELGIAN PLAYS BRILLIANTLY Horemans Amazes Onlookers Daly’s Academy by His Cue Skill New York, Jan. 20.—Edouard Horemans, the Belgian cue expert, played two more remarkable games of 18-1 balklbine billards yesterday esmal reot magewmd arlapy kreoaly’s at Maurice Daly’s academy. In the afternoon game he far eclipsed the new high-run mark of 145 which he made on Tuesday and which was (three points better than Frank Ives r made in 1897. In the opening inning of the afternoon game he clicked off a tatal of 207 peints, to the amaze- ment of the large and enthusiastic gallery, made up of the greater part of clever biRliardists. During that run, which is a new American record at 18-1 balkline in a match, a tournament, or an exhibi- i tion, the Belgian tallied no less than | 40 points by means of masse shots while his draw shots were to numer- ous to count. At the conclusion of the game he expressed disappointment at not having run out the entire 300 pPoints of the block. TEMPTING PLAYERS AN EVIL at Offers of Big Salaries to Players = Menace, Saye Mack Philadelphia, Jan. 20.—Tempting baseball payers by offers of big salar- fes is the greatest menace the game offers, in the opinion of Connie Mack, manager and part owner of the Phil- adelphia Americans. “First division teams,”” Mack said today, “think that whenever a star is developed all they have to do is advertise that they will pay thousands of dollars for him and then double the salary he is getting from his present club. To my mind, that is the biggest menace baseball faces now.
