The fire started, apparently, in the basement of the bufldinf at 5 East Seventh street, occupied hv Newstadt Brothers, contracting painters, where paint and oils were stored. The blaze then worked its way into the base- ment of the Newark shoe store, at the corner of Market St., in Wilmington, Del.,, apd rushed up the shaft on the Seventh street side of the building, filline the entire strneture with smoke. Chief Engineer Lutz was at the fire early, and fearing a bad blaze, or- dered a second alarm struck.
