Carl Wan- derer took the stand yesterday after- noon in his trial for the murder of his wife, her unborn child and “the ragged stranger” the night of June 21 last. Wanderer repudiated the confession he made to the Chicago police that he killed his wife and an unidentified man. While he did not deny hé had signed the confession attributed to him, he declared it Wwas not true and had been made under police compulsion He explained the fact that both pistols in the case had been traced to him by saying he had claimed the ownership of the one belonging to the stranger because he wished to protect his cousin, Fred Wandcrer. Asked if he had killed his wife, Wanderer answered in a firm, clear voice: “No, sir.” He also denied he had quarrelled with his wife or that he had want- ed to get back iInto the army. He { stated that he had made his confes- wion after several sleepless nights and systematic persecution by members of the homicide squad. Insanity is the defense put forth by the attorneys defending Wanderer. Dr. W. J. Hockson, head of the Chi- cago Municipal Psychopathic labora- tory, was called as witness for the de- fense before Wanderer took the stand. He told of having examined Wander- | er In the county jail on September 2. Dr. Hockson told first about the “ab- “l asked him,” he testified, “to point out the incongruity of such statements as these: ‘The body of a woman was lounfl cut up into eighteen pieces. The police believe that she committed suicide.’ ‘A’ man was struck by a street car and killed. At the hospitals the doctor sald he had a chance to recover.’ “Wanderer could not see any ab- surdity in statements of this kind, which usually dre detected by chil- dren § or 10 years old. “I subjected him mext to the ‘sen- tence’ test. But he fell down sig- nally on that, too. He could not complete such obvious sentences as: “The lu off the Qr-rk' “The cow Eives “In the ‘ohcer\'lnx test’ T found his powers of reasoning and observation very weak. I asked him. ‘He was there as a witness or best man’ was the reply. “Then you believe the defendant is insane?” asked Wanderer's attorney. “I do.” “Was be insane on June 21, 1920°" (That is the date on which Wanderer killed his wife). “He was.” “And in July, 1920?"
